EC14/20advice

I am looking at geting a teleconverter to give me a bit more reach.

Having spoken to a couple of photo shops they are telling me that the ec20 only works with a limited range of Oly lenses and probably wont work very well if at all with Sigma lenses. I am looking to use it primarily with my Sigma 135-400 on my E3 .

One shop advised me that EC14 is a better bet and may well work ok with my Sigma.

Any advice much appreciated before I shell out a load of readys

Re: EC14/20advice

I have 1.4 & 2x and the 2x hardly ever gets used.

The 1.4 with the 50mm f/2 is excellent as it gives me a great working distance for portrates at f2.8

Not a lot of help, but I don't do a lot of long tele work

I'm fairly sure that the EC20 is really best suited to the faster f2 lenses. The EC14 is the one I have and works superbly - but I would be hesitant about the EC20 unless you have previously tried it with the lens intended.

I think you are on very safe ground with the EC14 though!

Re: EC14/20advice

Both the EC20 and EC14 will work with all Oly lense, and I have also used a borrowed EC20 on my Sigma 50-500mm - and it works fine on that too. At that extreme one needs a lot of light as the max aperture was something like f8 or even more, but I did it mainly to see what sort of image quality could be ontained at 1000mm. Though it will work, the EC20 is really only best used on the faster prime lenses from Oly.

For all round use, as has been said the EC14 yields excellent results across all lenses and is a much better bet.

I am sure both would work on your Sigma 150-400mm but you will get much sharper results by using the EC14 on it.

Hope this helps Roger. Good luck. Oh, and do let us know what you do, and post some shots.

Re: EC14/20advice

There is no restriction on which lens you can use the EC-20 with, but as you lose two stops of brightness, it's not recommended that you use the EC-20 with slower lenses, like the 70-300 f/4-5.6. This would become an impressive 140-600 (280-1200 equivalent) but the maximum aperture would be f/8-11, making autofocus in all but very bright conditions quite problematical. Using a 35-100 f/2 with an EC-20 is much more logical, as the maximum aperture only drops to f/4. With a 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 you get a 100-400 f/5.6-7.1, which is manageable, etc.
