Thanks, Ed.

I hope to find at least one more species of Longhorn this summer.

Thanks, Alf.

For the recent ones, the foliage was more of a problem that the beetle, making low angle shots impossible.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Scorpionfly Females

The females differ from the males in not having the scorpion-sting-like, swollen structure at the end of the abdomen. The tip is sclerotised (brown, thickened and shiny) but tubular. The tip of the abdomen is not curled upwards and forwards, as it is in the male, giving fewer opportunities to find a suitable shooting angle.

Here is a selection, shot on more than one day. I am now seeing at least one adult each day, on one occasion framing a male in the foreground with another (too far away to determine its sex) behind it. There is a strong resident population.

EM-1 (manual mode), Kiron 105mm at f16, twin TTL RC flash, hand-held

Harold

Alf,

Well done. Bugs are a nightmare to identify.

Thanks, Alf.

I have just been out, with camera, to see what was around before it rained (it has just started).

I noticed one male SF on the Goldenrod, where I had seen the very first one. In trying to evade my lens, it gave me a lovely variety of angles, some new ones.

I moved to the blackcurrants, and, almost immediately, had a similar experience with another male, who was trickier, making it a session of quite a few minutes.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I am just back from a week long photo holiday in the Cevennes National Park in France. I was primarily there for butterflies but I also saw some wonderful birds (just posted a Red-backed Shrike over here) and huge numbers of orchids amongst some amazing wild flowers. Along with 6 lifetime first sightings (to me) of new butterflies.

So I have a lot of butterflies to share along with some other insects. Hope that will be interesting.

I am not starting with rarities just one which wanted to give me a nice colourful photo opportunity. Not seen in the UK the Spotted Fritillary, Melitaea didyma is sitting on a Pyramidal orchid, Anacamptis pyramidalis.
