Open your door to Trick or Treat?

This damn stupid Trick or Treat import from Trump land is nearly upon us.

Do you open your door to these morons?

Imagine being confronted with the question Trick or Treat? Then getting your own back by throwing a bag of flour in their direction. (I honestly wouldn't do that, but in my dreams maybe.)

And whilst I have my Victor hat on... I see the bombfire season has started, a bombfire night almost every night through to the middle of January.

I don't believe it!

Um, actually Halloween is one thing not attributable to Trump (not that I am a Bridge Player). All Saints is probably the most observed day around the world. Serious if you regard your Ancestors. Unfortunate if you happen to live in a commercialised plastic mask environment.

Re: Open your door to Trick or Treat?

This place reads just like CNN. The tradition is centuries old and is British and Irish. Other cultures do it too, i quite like the sugar skulls of Mexico. Only the actual words "trick or treat" are from 'Trumpland' in the 1920s.

afaik there is an etiquette forming in most areas of the UK -- if you leave lit-up pumpkins and other decor around your front door then you will be targeted by the little tyrants.

Speaking of minor cultural annoyances, the petrol station shop at the end of my street has been selling mince pies and yule logs since September 1st.

Funnily enough it will be the White Hart but not that one!

Hallowe'en is indeed an ancient tradition, but "trick or treat" is not; I certainly didn't know of it in my youth. Our autumn celebration is Guy Fawkes' Night .

Well I've never 'wassailed' but i'd be reluctant to deny it its 'tradition' status. Children begging for goodies at halloween has it's origins in souling and guising, themselves based on older traditions. You can read all about it here, scroll down to History. Those that do may interestingly note that Shakespeare wasn't too keen on 'Hallowmas beggars' either.
