Thanks Alf. Coventry is pretty dreary, but the cathedral is a bit special.

Love these. My better half and myself are visiting later in the year for a gig at this location. American blues/soul singer called Beth Hart.

Re: Coventry Cathedral

Nice inside shots Paul. I seem to remember the outside of the Cathedral looked quite interesting in places too.

Re: Coventry Cathedral

I was born in Coventry, and can remember it before the cathedral was built. Never been inside it! My old school held its Founder's Day service in the old cathedral till 1961; then in '62 used Holy Trinity. They were going to have it in the new cathedral in '63, but I'd left school by then. The old city, despite the destruction, had a soul. That is what has gone, IMV. But there are a few good old buildings still, I believe. Like many Coventrians, i loathed the new cathedral!

They are certainly good photos, but would that the old cathedral was still intact. I told a German friend, Handel played the organ in the old cathedral, and the Luftwaffe came and destroyed it. She couldn't see the irony....

Re: Coventry Cathedral

Yes, it was a truly terrible time on all sides in Europe: the destruction of the medieval cities of Germany was, it must be said, more complete (e.g. Dresden, Nuremburg etc).

Indeed. I remember seeing an exhibit (I think in the IWM) that showed a graph of ordnance dropped by all protagonists during the war and by year. Whilst there was a decent blip as the Germans bombed the UK, it pales into insignificance when the allied bombing of Germany is considered.

Of course, this is one of the factors in Germany's economic success today. Courtesy of the Marshall Plan and Breton Woods, Germany was largely rebuilt after the war by the Americans. We were left paying off lend-lease...

Coventry is/was twinned with Dresden, and helped restore it, especially the Frauenkirche. I think a good way to put it into perspective is that 160 acres of Coventry city centre was flattened; 13 1/4 square miles of Dresden suffered the same fate. Marshall Aid of course was aimed at buffering Communism. Per capita, the nation that had most Marshall Aid was....Iceland. Second was IIRC, The Netherlands. Incidentally, Allied bombing of France killed more French people than the Germans did; part of the irony of war, I suppose.

Back to photos though! Your images, Paul, demonstrate very well what dramatic results you can get in a modern building. Perversely, it would have been possible to get some very dramatic images from the wartime destruction; Coventry has a large archive of photos of it, both before and during the reconstruction (which also encompasses the city council's demolishing of much of what the Luftwaffe failed to do); sadly, they aren't made available to the general public to view.

I also think it sad that the new cathedral was not designed by a member of a well-known Coventry family, Frank Gibberd, who was the architect of the circular catholic cathedral of Liverpool. It would be interesting to see some comparisons of the two buildings. Most of the Gibberds were alumni of my old school.

You didn't have to go privately when I went there though! (However, I also attended the prep school, which was private)
