Tut tut, stacking TCs.

It's been snowing for the past 9 hours so no sign of the moon around here.

Re: Perfect conditions this evening....

Huw,

I'm trying to work out how much difference between your image and mine is due to the extra x2 TC and how much is due to the use of stacking software...

I think Dunmow is around 20 miles (ATCF) from here and time wise there's little in it too!

Please will you post a single image rather than a composite image so I can compare?

Hi Walti,

I've cropped and resized (1200 x 1200) as close as I could to your image from a single frame of the 30. I have applied some light PP in Capture One to taste.
By the way I'm not located in Dunmow, that's our friend John (Zuiko). I'm based West of Reading just north of the M4.

To my eye Regitax improves on a good single shot, with multiple images merged.

Re: Perfect conditions this evening....

Hmm who says you can't stack TCs? Nice one Huw they are both cracking shots. I wonder how close you'd get to the regitax shot by just sharpening up your single shot a bit more in PP?

Re: Perfect conditions this evening....

That's a stunning show Huw. I think I can see the Apollo 11 lunar lander base if I look hard enough!

Thanks for the tip on Registrax. Just tried it myself with the 50-200 plus 1.4TC. I managed to get a half-decent image, but with only 280mm of reach, it's not got the details yours has. Magnifico!

Thanks Phill
The neat thing with registax is that has an averaging effect.
With a shot like this, even in perfect conditions you will have one image where an area looks good whilst another area has a blurred effect due to atmospheric conditions.
Averaging out these issues helps create a nice balance of detail without the need to push sharpness to the point where it accentuates noise and other artefacts.

I wonder what focal length we would need to even pick out the Eagle descent stage (still on the moon), I sure it would need to be an amazing piece of hardware.
For me viewing the moon with an 840 mm focal length is still a pretty amazing fascination.

By the way, how many images did you stack? I'd be interested to see how it turned out.

Hi Hew - I stacked 14 images. All taken at 1/90s, f11 at ISO 64. I probably stopped down too much (diffraction). Here is the image:
