Smile Autumn leaves

I'm posting a copy of a lovely photograph taken by my wife, Julia.

We were walking around a local lake at this time last year. Me with the E1, Julia with the E500. We had taken some shots of autumn leaves reflecting in the water with ducks and swans when I came upon a small twig with lovely coloured leaves. Tossing it in the water we both took pictures. Mine remain buried on a CD somewhere - this one was untouchable and I admit defeat.

Julia has a special knack of using false colour by taking unusual white balances (mostly accidentally just touching the WB button as we walk) and the results are sometimes amazing. The picture was taken in raw and jpg and this is the jpg version. Using the raw file I can reset the WB and make it as dull as my own! But we prefer the mediterranean blue

I have printed this and framed it for some friends who thought it was lovely and relaxing and wanted a copy.

We aren't competitive and really do enjoy taking photographs together and I recommend it to you all.

Nicely spotted and a very nice image.

I think wb and colour is very personal, I doubt whether many painted images accurately reflect a 'real' wb (and why should they?).Anyway I see things differently as a 2 dimensional image compared with 3-d reality.

If this was my image I might do a bit of post processing - in GIMP I'd create a second layer and merge back with mode = multiply and opacity of about 80, this will deepen the blue, smooth out the highlight at the front of the image and enhance the colour contrast in the leaf.

But this is foto fair, and it is your picture so offerring advice is a bit cheeky - showed that I liked it though.

Nick

Re: Autumn leaves

Lovely picture. The strong bold colours work really well, I can see why people liked it The reflection of the leaf works well too, adding something over just the leaf in water.

All the best,
Phil

Re: Autumn leaves

Well, preferring the non-competitive side to photography too, all I can say is - I wish that it had been my own photo!
A lovely shot, the colours really lifts the scene, and all in all I feel quite jealous!
I'm sure that we must have missed the autumn colours up here in the north, but perhaps I was concentrating on the wrong image. I seem to be in my panorama phase at the moment, so perhaps I need to get to my RAW editing experimental phase so see if I can get a wonderful image like yours.

Re: Autumn leaves

Thank you for those kind comments.

I don't work with Gimp but have worked on the picture a little in photoshop to see if I can produce the sort of picture Nick spoke about and I attach it here.

I'm not sure which I prefer as I am too close to the original but I can see a place for both.

This has been a good encouragement to posting images.

best wishes

Peter
