Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

Impressively quick to get a post up Beagletorque and mighty impressive shots too. Were they with the 300mm?
I had a great day too but will reserve judgement on my shots till I've had chance to look at them on the pc tomorrow. That long hot drive back has finished me off for the day. It was excellent to meet up with so many people I felt I knew but had never met. It was a really good crowd all together plus Jonathan and the team from Olympus did a grand job. I too learnt a lot weather I'll remember it tomorrow is another matter, hopefully I will be able to read my own writing from the notes I took. Now to open a bottle of something cold and a toast to the next outing

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

OK so had to have a quick go so here is a first attempt at a raw conversion using V3 and a slight crop in Picassa for ease. I've shrunk the file too much really but I'd say Jonathan's settings are definitely working for me. This was with the 40-150 at 150 and 1/1000s. Believe it or not this plane was travelling really fast!

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

It was a great day, the Olympus team couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming, and it was really nice to meet forum members.

I did quite a bit of shooting in the hangers, especially because I wanted to try out the 8mm fisheye: Duxford is a fun venue for that sort of thing. I might post a few later, but as long as I took great care to position the camera exactly right it was possible to get some entertaining compositions. The lens is a pleasure to use and (once I'd cleaned the front element!) it seems to flare less than my Samyang 7.5mm.

When I was outside there were only propeller planes flying, and Jonathan undoubtedly recommended settings that worked: the camera focused quite well and the props were nicely blurred at shutter speeds that varied between 100 and 320th and ISO 'Low' in the bright sunlight (shutter priority, CAF, 9 points, Lock = 0, aperture varied around f8-11). However, getting critically sharp focus at that sort of shutter speed at 300mm is I'm sure a matter of practice, and I wouldn't say that I got any images that were bitingly sharp.

However, I'm not sure about his recommendation to turn IS off. It's handy with the 300 to be able to switch it on and off so easily with the lens switch, and after playing around I'm fairly convinced that I got more almost sharp with it on IS-Auto. I find the same with birds in flight. I'd be interested in what others found.

Here's a set of the best of the Memphis Belle - I'm sure I could make the flight ones look punchier with some selective sharpening, clarity and structure and I may turn down the saturation a tad, but I haven't got time for that just now...

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

Nice set Mark. I found I needed stabilisation "on" with the 300mm. My prop shots were @1/320th and even with low iso the F stop was way too high as diffraction on that lens sets in @ f5.6. Only a few were critically sharp.

A couple with the 8mm.

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

Yes, I hadn't thought about diffraction - I might be feeling a bit better about them!
Capture One 10 has a Diffraction slider that claims to be moderately effective so I'll give that a go.

If you know the weather's going to be bright it might be worth trying a few screw-on ND filters

A few of mine. All with Em1 Mk2.
The first view of the museum, and these were only a fraction of the collection. Looks like the commercial section.

7-14mm Pro. 1/10th Sec f2.8

This airplane was massive, cannot remember the name, but this gives an idea of why it was designed.

7-14mm Pro 1/25th Sec f3.2

Detail of something.

12-40 mm Pro 1/10th Sec f2.8

The Memphis Belle and a crew member.

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

Here are a few more 40-150mm shots from me. Not quite as sharp as the first one but these were heavier crops. Wish I'd borrowed the 300mm for these

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

Nice set there Phil, reality like no 2+3.
Well I'm not sure what happened regarding meeting up, it was a larger than I had expected group and I don't know for sure who I crossed paths with in the end, but it was a fantastic day which I really enjoyed and can't thank the Olympus team and Jonathan enough. I think I need a lot more practice though
Really great pix from you guys so far

Re: Duxford Olympus Experience Day

I've tweaked the 3 Memphis Belle images above with the diffraction control in the latest version of Capture One Pro 10 (that still doesn't have native support for the 300mm f4.0, I see).

Not sure how the differences will come out on here via Flickr and the forum's recommended sizing, but they are noticeably crisper at 100% on my desktop, anyway.

Interestingly, in the first and third images the kit was definitely focusing on the yellow and black painted engine nacelle (right, inboard engine) rather than the cockpit - I guess this had the highest contrast, and it doesn't matter much at the sort of distances and apertures involved here. However, if you wanted to get critical focus on the cockpit you'd need to use single point and have killer panning skills.
