I am of an age that makes me struggle to understand why any one should want such a thing in their home.
I know everything i do online is recorded/scrutinised and feel ime stuck with that but saying come into my home and collect more information, no way.

I totally agree, no way am I having one in my house. But be aware television controllers are becoming available with speech recognition built-in. At the moment you still have to press the enable button for the television to respond, but I am sure it won't stay that way.

Got an Amazon Echo (Alexa), fairly handy for controlling awkward to reach sockets, getting news updates, timers and alarms, links in with smart heating controls, all kinds of things.

These devices have huge potential for making live easier for elderly housebound people and those with dementia, so don’t dismiss that side of things simply because you can’t see a use.

If someone wants to listen to me cough and fart and talk utter twaddle then so be it, couldn’t give a toss really.
