A stupid electrical question

Like many people, I have an increasing number of electric appliances which are recharged by using their usb cables. My question is, are they interchangeable?

Obviously, you have to use a cable which fits the device. But t'other end is a universal usb connection. Can I therefore freely use a mains plug which came with, say, my Kindle to recharge, say, my XZ-1, or the missus' wii battery?

I believe they are, well.... I have a number of power adapters with 5V USB power outputs like everyone else, and use them interchangeably. USB should be a standard 5V output, but some may deliver more milliamps (mA) and therefore charge quicker, but I am under the impression its pretty universal. Others with better knowledge may add more info.

Yes, I tend to agree with this.

You are probably OK with a basic charger, but you can't always depend on your laptop to charge your USB gizmo unless it has a driver installed for the gizmo. PC USB ports sometimes withold most of their power until they recognise the thing at the other end of the string.

i'm doing kindle and phone off the same chargers, only blind optimism rather than science behind that decision though.

I love the honesty in that reply, haha

I would have to agree with the first reply in saying that USB should be a universal 5v output so they should all be compatible in theory at least

So do I! But we all know about so-called compatibility, don't we?

Re: A stupid electrical question

I have read on the various forums people claiming that not all USB cables are complete and that the power does not always get through - however I have not experienced this. I am quite cavalier in that I mix and match the various USB power supplies (USB sockets on the computers, wall warts and 13 amp plugs) to charge all manner of devices - no doubt one day I will be greeted by a smelly hot plastic lump <g>

Re: A stupid electrical question

Which leads me neatly onto my next stupid question.

I intend to put a USB 3.0 card in my PC along with a 3 hub and card reader. Am I correct in thinking that there is no such thing as a USB 3 cable, and all such claims are just snake oil?

Re: A stupid electrical question

I'm the same, I'm using 1 charger lead in my van for my phone, sat nav, and bluetooth headset.

Experience 2 years, no problems, apart from a Peugeot 3008 which for some reason wouldn't give full power from its cigarette lighter and wouldn't fully charge my sat nav! Last year I drove over 17 vehicles and did over 60,000 miles!

Re: A stupid electrical question

Some cheap power supplies with USB port (plug pack type) only supply a low current O/P & are no where near enough to power something like the fans in a cooled laptop base which require a lot more (bought to keep an old Dell laptop cool, which I didn't keep anyhow). I don't even power them from the laptop because of the current drain.

Re: A stupid electrical question

The spec’s compatibility lies in the design of the new connectors. USB 2.0 cables worked off of four lines – a pair for in/out data transfer, one line for power, and the last for grounding. USB 3.0 adds five new lines (the cable is noticeably thicker), but the new contacts sit parallel to the old ones on a different plane, as opposed to being adjacent to them. This means you’ll be able to differentiate between 2.0 and 3.0 cables just by looking at the ends.

Re: A stupid electrical question

Right, I've just got a USB external hard drive (Seagate Goflex Satellite) which is USB 3.0. The "A" end is just like any other USB cable, but the "B" end which you plug into the drive is totally different. This means that, until I get a USB 3.0 card for my PC, I can use the drive on my existing USB 2.0 hubs etc.

Incidentally, this drive does not take any power through the USB cable as it has its own internal rechargeable power supply.
