More Portrait and a Self Portrait For The None Squimish

A few more from the family portrait shoot I did Saturday. Those of a nervous nature should not look at the old Grandad in the last one as the face may disturb some viewers.

What a beautiful little lass. Lovely shots, superb lighting and exposure. Can you give us some details on lighting set-up?

Thank you David, it was a very simple set up as (as usual) I was working in a very confined space.

Just one light a very old 15 years plus Jessop Power flash studio light, a translucent (shot through) umbrella and small Jessop's backdrop.

Lighting technique was a cross between paramount (butterfly) lighting and loop lighting, basicly a light 6 feet from the subject about 3 to 4 feet to camera right and about 40% above the sitters head. This always works well for me in confined spaces and allows some movement of the face without altering the lights.

The light was placed nearer the apex of the umbrella as this narrows the light beam and semi spotlights the subject face and allows a little light fall off from the surrounding areas and is the reason I prefer shoot through umbrella's to soft boxes as they are more flexible.

In this one you can see the butterfly lighting to better effect (the shadow under the nose, changing the angle of the head changes it to loop lighting shadow at the side of the nose.

And which way you angle the head changes it to either broad or short loop lighting which side of the face is lit broad or narrow side. Because of the confined space it tends to be a compromise.

Re: More Portrait and a Self Portrait For The None Squimish

These are really good Paul, even the last one

Thank you for answering David's request for details of the set up. I would have thought to achieve results like these would have required two lights at least but I am learning

Thanks again

Greg

Thank you Greg not sure about the last one though as he is a bit ugly.

Glad the details were of help and yes one light is often enough, after all there is only one sun.

Very nice set Paul. I've never gotten the hang of this lighting stuff, it's all a bit opaque to me

And it's not necessarily in the right place . That's why this bloke featured on "The Art Of The Night" on the beeb last night would only do his outdoor shots at night!

Lovely shots, and two things I'm sure you already know: Chelsea is a little cutie, and Laura is gorgeous.

Big thumbs-up from me.

I gently tip toed in to look ... and I have to ask "Does Bella sing?" you could make a fourtune with that dog on U-tube and some PP work

Lovely portraits ... even the old chap at the end is looking happy

Paul a great Christmas me thinks you had
