Ec20 + 70-300

I am aware that the ec1.4 works well with the 70-300, but how well does the ec20 perform in terms of I.Q. I know that I will lose 2 stops of light but that is not an issue. On a tight budget so the 300 f2.8 is not an option alas!

The hard fact is that 2 stops loss in light very much is an issue. Even at 70mm wide open with the converter the maximum brightness will be at f/8. At 300mm that becomes f/11. You will only be comfortable in the brightest of conditions. At 300mm the lens is effectively a 1200mm super tele with the EC-20 and even on a tripod you will see shake .

Re: Ec20 + 70-300

I agree with Ian. Most people I know who have bought 2x converters over the years have not been happy with them. Two stops is a lot to lose. A 1.4x is a better bet in my opinion, just losing one stop.

Can you hire or borrow one to test your ideas before laying out the cash?

Re: Ec20 + 70-300

In anything but the best lighting I even find the faster 50-200 and EC20 combo to be hard work quite often and somtimes wish that I had the EC14. But you can never have enough reach so I always put up with these struggles and the slight softness that usually results.

Re: Ec20 + 70-300

I have tried the EC20 / 70-300mm combo, & found I was wasting my time, but it does sort of work with the EC14

Re: Ec20 + 70-300

The EC-20 is a very good piece of kit but is only useable with a lens of f4 or below I use mine with the ZD150 f2 and this is a fantastic combo I have also used it with my Sigma 150 f2.8 and the auto focus is not affected with these lenses I also know people who use it with the ZD300 f2.8 and ZD90-250 f2.8 but I would not recommend trying it with the 70-300.

Thanks for the usual fast response. It's looking like the ec1.4 is a goer then!
