Taken with a humble, second hand EPL6 at Slimbridge wetlands centre today. Knocked out how good the little camera can be.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Good news, I saw one half of the pair of spotted flycatchers that have nested in the garden for the last few years has returned! Hopefully that other one is about too.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

You are just showing off now. I haven't even seen a Spotted Flycatcher this year and I would love to have them nesting in my garden. A super shot.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

June 3rd and 10 of the 11 young have left the nest. The 11th however can't get up the nerve to leave. It spent the day getting up to the opening and looking out. Occasionally one of the adults would be outside the box calling to it and it was still being fed at times. It spent the night by itself but left early the following morning.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I'd be pleased if someone could ID this little bird for me. I was walking through an area of gorse, hawthorn and bracken (SW Scotland). There were lots of linnets, a few stonechats, whitethroat, meadow pipits, skylarks, a pair of twite, and this wee bird, which I initially thought was a female whitethroat. However having looked at the pics on the PC at home the chest seems too white and there seems to be quite a pronounced eye stripe. Any ideas?

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I would say it is either a Chiffchaff or Willow Warbler. The pale legs make me think it is a Willow Warbler although the feathers are often more yellow than this one. I could be wrong though

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Here are a few pictures taken at The Hawk Conservancy, near Andover. BiF are not something I've tried before, so reasonably pleased with these (there were a lot more that I discarded!).

It looks like a Willow Warbler. (Chiff-chaffs look almost the same but have darker, brown legs.)

If it was warbling it isn't a Chiffchaff, if it was going chiff chaff, chiff chaff, chiff chaff, it's not a Willow Warbler. See, I can be helpful.

I'd go with Willow Warbler.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I checked the nest box in the evening and early morning for a couple of days after the young left in case any came back to roost in the box overnight. They never did and this may explain why, this is what I saw a day after the straggler left the box.
