When its gone its gone....

Had to have our 10 year old Lab Charlie put down today, can't even begin to explain how i feel tonight....such a shock in the vets at 8-30 today, operation at 10-0 as he had fluid in his abdomen which turned out to be blood, and then as they found out cancer in his Kidney's and liver so no chance, put to sleep at 1-30pm....so sad as the history with him is immense, helped my son through severe depression 4 years ago, without him he would not be here....I could see something was wrong last night, so I knew he would need a vets visit this morning, but still a shock....he came on holiday last week with us and loved Devon...happy memories....i know there are those that don't have/ never had a dog, but when they say man's best friend that's no lie. Never bit anyone never growled at anyone, he was a special special dog, walked miles and miles with him, wore out three pairs of walking shoes, and even today when he didn't want to walk, he made the effort to 10 yds down the road before he came back ..... a large hole is left in our lives....

Cheers

Peter

Re: When its gone its gone....

Really sorry to hear this Peter. I've had dogs all my life since childhood, and I've had to have some put to sleep. I know just how awful you're feeling tonight.

Peter, I am choking up reading your post. I know that nothing can be said that will make you feel better, but having lost dogs that I have loved, I don't think that they ever really leave you.

I hope that your pain eases soon and that you have many happy memories to cherish

Re: When its gone its gone....

Peter, so very VERY sad to hear this, and fully know how you feel about your best friend.

Perhaps as the pain eases, you can reflect on what a grand life you gave Charlie or else you would not be feeling as sad today ...

and think more about all the wonderful days, walks and "talks" you had with Charlie, you too were blessed to have and to hold and love your Charlie

So sorry to hear this Peter. It sounds as if you gave Charlie the best life a lab could have and I'm sure his memories will stay with you.

Re: When its gone its gone....

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts.....never had a dog before Charlie, always thought they were hard work and took up too much time.....how wrong can you be, there will never be another one like him...he was the last one of the litter, and he looked at us and we knew we wanted him...we picked him up from the kennels in Norfolk almost exactly 10 years ago to the day, still can't believe it this morning....here's a quick picture of him, not up to OlyPaul standards, but he was a handsome dog...

Have to pick him up and bury him today so that's going to be tough...thanks for your thoughts once again...

Peter

Re: When its gone its gone....

Very sorry to read this. We lost our Molly almost three years ago now and even though we have a lab and a labradoodle her name comes up in conversation frequently. She is still missed greatly having been a major part of family life for many years so I understand how you must feel.

Very sorry to hear this, Peter. It's devastating when a devoted friend passes away, but console yourself in the fact that you looked after your dog till the end, and made sure he was treated with dignity.

Re: When its gone its gone....

So sorry to hear of your loss and my thoughts are with you and the rest of your family - I'm not a "Dog Person" but we have always had Cats (currently share the house with three - one of whom is still going through various courses of treatment including major surgery for a variety of issues that started a couple of months ago) and I know only too well just how much a part of the family pets become.
