Re: Sigma Announces 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM 4/3

That would be a nice lens but it's difficult IMO to justify spending that amount when I already have an OM 50mm f/1.8 and OM 50mm f/1.4 can be had for less than £100. I think that's one of the reasons for the lack of fast primes in 4/3rds fit, the ones that you really can't replicate using OM lenses are going to have to be pretty fast for the focal length to equate to 35mm prime lenses, you'd need a 25mm f/1.4, to equate to an OM 50mm f/1.4, Panasonic do one but it's over £500.

Granted the Sigma lens works with total compatability but as I'd want to use it wide open anyway I'd really only be buying AF capability.

Still a useful lens to have in the 4/3rds line-up.

This could very well be the Portrate lens I've been wanting.

Ian,

Please grab one and do your thing

Look forward to seeing a side by side between this and the Olympus 50mm f2

The release info prices it at £379.99 but who knows what it will end up as when it hits the high st.

Re: Sigma Announces 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM 4/3

An interesting offering.. BTW - are the lens manufacturers digging out their old 35mm lens designs and dusting them off for the new age, I wonder :-)

It will have to pedal hard to improve on the Oly 50mm f2 macro - particularly if you have to stop the Sigma down to 1.8 or 2 to get it sharp to the edges.

However - I have an open mind.. after all they say it "corrects possible sagittal coma flare" which I am sure is a relief to us all

Re: Sigma Announces 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM 4/3

Hi,

Just checked the review of this lens on dpreview, it's very positive, but still states "...could be the ideal fast portrait prime for Four Thirds, it appears unlikely to be able to match the Zuiko Digital ED 50mm F2.0 Macro for outright sharpness." I guess you always would have to stop down to F2 anyway!?!

It would be more interesting to see a high quality 25mm F1.4, i.e. a 50mm equivalent.

Well, you already have the choice of the 25mm f/1.4 from Panasonic/Leica, plus the 30mm f/1.4 from Sigma.

By the way, I have filed a short hands-on report about the new 50mm f/1.4 on FTU:

Re: Sigma Announces 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM 4/3

This is a bit off topic but I will throw it in: I just checked the Oly lens roadmap and, yes, there is supposed to be a 100mm tele macro due this year...

If that performed like a big brother of the 50mm then it could be very interesting. 100mm f2 or even f2.8 that doubles as a low light tele lens.

What has become of it?? Anyone know?

Pete

I stopped by the Sigma 4/3rds stand and I was impressed with the 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG HSM lens it feels very balanced on the E-3 and the focus was fast.
