Olympus C21 - in 2001

Early this century I was travelling overseas a lot with my job. Trying to travel hand baggage only was a challenge and for years I had taken a Minox GT-E 35mm film camera, and very good it was.

My first Olympus digital camera was a C2000, but I found it a bit bulky for travel and eventually got a C21, the digital equivalent of the Minox.

Looking back, all we had then was OOC jpegs and they were very good.

Here is one from a dockside at Aalesund Norway taken in the pouring rain (see rain spots on the lens)

Love the atmosphere. On the web, could we tell this apart from a shot created with a much later camera? I'm not sure that we could.

John,

No, I don't think we could. Shot in RAW nowadays I would just darken the top left hand corner a bit, the rest of it is fine by me....

Re: Olympus C21 - in 2001

Very moody I like it a lot!

Here is one taken with an 3MP Olympus C-300Z just a few weeks short of ten years ago and the quality still impresses me. I have made A3 prints from this camera that look really good:

That's my younger daughter and she will be 15 tomorrow!

Ian, you can't complain at the quality of that by any standard and I bet this picture is treasured even more now that she's growing up so fast!

Re: Olympus C21 - in 2001

I know, John But the images this camera produced (I eventually gave it to Julia's mother and I think she still has it but has switched to a more modern camera with a larger screen) were consistently impressive. There is no chromatic aberration, it's sharp, the noise is well controlled at low ISOs, the colour is very true -the dynamic range is very good. It's amazing for a ten year old compact camera design.

The successor to my C21 travel camera was a mju300, which I still have. Quality from that 3MP is also impressively good.

So when you look at images like these tell me why we need 16 Mega pixel monsters now?

Re: Olympus C21 - in 2001

I do not think we do, certainly for my purposes 12MP is enough. All four of my Oly cameras are 12MP.

I have a recently purchased Sony RX100, bought because it is the only compact camera approved for use by the Stock Agency I use. If you downsize the Sony 20MP to 12MP the quality is nearly as good as 4/3rds.

And here is another atmospheric shot from that C21. Barcelona market in November 2000. Again completely unprocessed OOC jpeg.

Yep that's really good too Peter. And I use 10MP myself.
