Getting a Little Steamed Up!

That is, with Australia's largest operating steam locomotive, Beyer-Garratt 6029 pulling a long line of carriages on trips from Penrith to Springwood (& back down with diesel).

The return trip back down the Mountains (on the previous day on a longer trip & looking compressed with a telephoto ens).

More about the BEYER-GARRATT 6029 is found at the bottom of this page.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Getting a Little Steamed Up!

Nice shots of an interesting engine Ross. Why do they use diesel power on the way back?

Thanks Phill. There's nowhere to turn the engine around so the diesel is attached at the end of the train for the reverse direction. Unfortunately, on the Saturday I picked the wrong location on the afternoon return & there is the Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum above where I had parked myself (I was wondering why the train was taking so long to come past as I had driven down the Mountains past the train) & they had separated the engine to stay there overnight while the rest of the train returned to Sydney, being pulled by the diesel engine with it being drive-able from either end, it could be shuffled past (train enthusiasts will probably scoff at my ignorant descriptions).

Nice shots of a very powerful locomotive. Built 1954 by Beyer Peacock & Co Manchester for the NSW Goverment Railway. Nice to see it restored and operating. It's simply called running round when the loco goes from one end of the coaching stock to the other.

Thanks Derek. I'm no train enthusiast but I hope I can get some more photos of other steam trains that will take the western line over the Blue Mountains in the future.
