Copying DVD's to iMac

Im have a DVD with plays in an external DVD drive on my iMac. I want to copy the DVD to my hard drive. There is no facility to do this on my iMac, anyone know of a good third party programme, that is easy to use?

Handbrake is pretty good - I use it on a Linux laptop. It's available for Macs:

Re: Copying DVD's to iMac

There are various apps available to 'mount' the contents of CD's and DVD's as logical drives on any internal hard drive. I think Handbrake is one of them. Once mounted the volume behaves just like a disk in your CD or DVD drive but is much quicker to access.

It is useful for frequently used CD's as these only take 800 MB at most, but DVD's take up quite a a lot more.

I think that Dave wants to 'rip' a DVD to (say) an MP4 or MKV file, so it will play on his computer, rather than to a file in order to mount it as a file system.

Yes, this is what I want. To be able to watch the content of the DVD on my iMac, without having the DVD in an external drive.

Re: Copying DVD's to iMac

There is another proggie that you could try, it's called MakeMKV. I know it does BD disks as I use it to back up my purchased disks. I believe it also does DVD files, although I have not used it for that format.

Where Handbrake comes in handy, is to transfer the ultra big BD files from MakeMKV down to 1 - 2Gb or even less.

MakeMKV is a trial version that lasts a month and requires a key.

Use this link https://www.makemkv.com/download/ for the program download and this for the required key https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053

The key is updated each month which allows the program to continue as a trial version.

Be advised, use these links so as to avoid rogue copies. It has been mentioned within the MakeMKV forum that rip-off versions are around and should be avoided due to possible malware infection. The same advice goes for the Handbrake download.

As Jim mentioned, Handbrake does allow various file formats to be used in the copy transfer mode as well as variations regards formats and video outputs.

Addendum: I forgot to mention that in using Handbrake you may need to find and download an extra file: LIBCSS? In W10, it is inserted into the Handbrake file and is also a requirement for the Mac systems. You can find it https://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html

The insertion set-up may be different to Windows etc?
