Moon, last quarter

Low standing moon from yesterday ecening in its last quarter. Sky was slighlty hazed with thin cloud veils, softening the moon a little bit.

I have preserved the colors rather than convering to grayscale.

ISO 320, 1/400s
Cropped about 50% and resized

Re: Moon, last quarter

Great contrast and detail, my moon pics never turn out like this.

Re: Moon, last quarter

Thanks for looking and for comments.

More about the picture:
I should have mentioned that the picture is taken using a spotting scope as lens, providing approx a 1200 mm focal length and horizontal angle of view of about 1.3degrees (1 degree vertical). The average angle the moon disc covers when viewed from the earth is about 3400 km/380000 km ~= 0.5 degrees (not sure what phase the moon is in right now but it does not impact significantly)

Moving at an average speed of 1022 km/s, the moon angular velocity when viewed from the earth is 0,00267 radians/sec (0.15 degrees/sec), most of this motion is horizontal. To ensure motion blur is virtually eliminated we need exposure time so that moon has moved less than a pixel on the sensor.
In theory the longest exposure time when using a 10-12 mpixel sensor to eliminate any motion blur is 1/400 s. One may argue if this is 100% relevant, there are so many other parameters that will influence such as impact of atmosphere and optical abberrations but 1/400 sec should ensure mortion blur can be disregarded from. Hence the exposure time.

ISO 320 rendered a picture with a histogram looking about right, black sky and no parts of the moon overexposed.

In the lab I stretched the high key parts of the image to increase the contrast somewhat.

In my photo gallery there is a picture of the moon first quarter taken in a high standing position, that picture has noticeably higher contrast and seems to produce highel level of sharpness.
