Where are the widgets you refer to ? I can't recall having seen any on Ian's forum sites ? Maybe i'm missing something as usual !

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Early attempts at using Facebook 'Like' buttons didn't work very well. FTU does have buttons for sharing posts to Twitter and Facebook.

I personally think that these issues are all teething ones. End-users enjoy using 'Like', forum owners like me want to provide added value for their users and exposure to a wider audience (Facebook) and of course Facebook benefits as well - why wouldn't they?

I personally know a few people who think Facebook is the spawn of the Devil. They don't take part in social media and, frankly, they miss out. We are a social media society now - there is no escaping it.

That means we all need to be a bit more thoughtful about what we do online. There needs to be more information available to everyone so they know what will happen to their personal data if the do things like 'Like' something.

You then have an informed choice to do it or not.

We are in a stage on the rapid development of social media where old norms are being challenged. This is quite normal! The way we live our lives now is different to how it was even just a few years ago.

Laws and regulations need to keep pace and I believe that the recent court action regarding these social media tools will be ongoing as social media develops and adapts.

Only one person has attempted to use GDPR against me and my websites and that was a complete failure because there was no basis in the complaint. I aim to keep it that way.

Of course, if it became absolutely clear that any tools used on the website became inappropriate for any reason, I'd taken action.

At present, the use of Like or Share buttons is almost universal. If for some absurd reason the law said - no - take them down, we would. I don't think we have got anywhere near that stage.

Hopefully all sides will work together to retain the usefulness of these features over time.

By the way! The Register, itself, uses social media buttons

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Can I ask if anyone who is registered on FTU and uses Tapatalk is having any problem logging in over there at the moment using their app?

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Iv'e just looked at FTU ( I'm not a member ) and spotted the widgets

These Twitter and FB widget things seem to be included on virtually every web site now, albeit not something I ever use.

Yup - so it would require a monumental change in the law to overcome the ubiquity of these sharing buttons.

I don't know if you use FB or Twitter but essentially what they do is to place a post on either of these social media networks with an excerpt from the post you were motivated to publicise to your friends and other social media contacts. The excerpt links back to the original site. For us that means more traffic and hopefully more interest in the site.

Keep getting a “login failed” message

Tried both old saved usernames and password, and entering them manually.

I don't use either Twitter or Facebook for a variety of reasons. Anything that increases the site traffic and generates more interest in the 3 sites has to be a worthwhile addition. Personally I fail to see what harm these widgets are and as you say, restricting their use would need a massive change in the law which I doubt if many would comply with anyway. Seems some lawmakers need to concentrate on the more important things in life which really matter.

Just with TapaTalk I assume (desktop login OK?)

There does seem to be a bug in the TapaTalk support since the latest update to vBulletin 5 which we're using on FTU - I have logged a support ticket.

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Just popped in to see the new workings of the site and left a pic which I took of Anne and our granddaughter last week on a visit to the family.

An attractive pair don't you think?

Just joined the other site to try it out (was not aware of it before). Have to say the uploading is a lot simpler.

Just an observation - on posts containing only a small amount of text there seems to be a huge amount of unnecessary 'white space' in the new look (eg: posts #2 & #3 in your "Daisies" thread).
In consquence viewing a thread containing many posts is going to require a lot of scrolling!

Yes, that's unavoidable because of the size of the poster info panel to the left of each post. I will investigate any possibility making an optimisation but I'm not that optimistic.
Ian[/QUOTE]

If you untick the "Show Avatars" box in your Profile/Settings it reduces the White Space a little.

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

I'm currently experimenting with a new 'home' page to supplement the forum 'index' page.

The 'home' page is not yet linked from the forum itself but you can see it here:

https://fourthirds-user.com/forum/Home

The main index page is here:

https://fourthirds-user.com/forum/

Remember the colours, the logo header and fonts and other styles will change; it's more about experimenting with the page tools at the moment.

Why is this relevant? Because the e-group will eventually be migrated to vBulletin 5 as well.
