Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

Catkins mentioned having another Northumbrian meetup ; it is a long time since Blast Beach and the autumn colours are coming in fast.

What? Where? When?

I don't have the knowledge of wooded locations that Catkins, Jdal and others obviously possess, but at least I can suggest we decide soon.

Enough time for everyone to get the idea and join in if they want.

(Chemop is away until 1st November by the way.)

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

Not sure if I could make it [depends on dates] but could I suggest Chopwell Woodland Park. There are different walks, river/stream disused railway and a car park facility.

They are having an Autumnal togging session in November so there must be something of interest to photograph?

You can find out more here

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

Chopwell wodds would be fine, but I get the feeling it's a bit ... organised.
Last time I was there was many years ago, helping out with a smithing demo infront of a 'bender'.
Thanks for the idea Wally.

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

What about Hulme park in Alnwick? There's woodland, towers, views over Northumberland and an Abbey, then there's Alnwick itself. It opens from 11:00 to sunset.

ps - it's His Nib's private parkland, grade 2 listed and VERY big - we're talking a few miles of walking to do the lot. But we can pick and choose bits. http://www.northumberlandestates.co...._hulnepark.php

Hulne Park is one place that I haven't visited but would like to, so that certainly sounds good.
Other possible locations include Hareshaw Linn near Bellingham (good cafe in old railway carriages at the Heritage Centre), Allen Banks (loo but no refreshments at location), Colt Crag reservoir/Green Rigg windfarm (no refreshments) or, over to the west, Gisland Spa (refreshments)/Crammal Linn waterfall and the Popping Stone.

Regards
Chris

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

Allen Banks is always good, I never saw a loo ... many years ago, mind.
Gilsland Spa walk is very good and the Spa has civilisation : but being literally ten minutes from me I'd be ashamed to put it forward : I'll vote for it though!

Some scenes from that there place ;

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

Gilsland Spa is a good one, river gorge, crags, trees, rapids. And Walltown Quarry is nearby for Roman Wall stuff.

The Wanneys (Colt Crag/Green Rigg) are a quagmire at the moment, are there good paths round the reservoir these days? Hareshaw Linn is a bit one-dimensional, but very good on the off chance we get some some rain

I think I'd vote for Gilsland.

Maybe we need a rota. South (Durham county), West (Tyne Valley/Alston), North (Coquetdale/Alnwick/Coast) and central (Tyneside/Wearside)

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

If Gilsland Spa area is the plan, then I can offer a little bit of extra incentive . . . low flying Dutch helicopters between Oct 29th and 9th Nov! So . . . a bit of action, waterfalls, gorge, colour and possibly there could be an appearance by the sun!

Twice a year the Dutch come to train, basing themselves at Carlisle airport, to then mainly use Spadeadam MoD range which is immediately to the north of Gisland Spa and Crammal Linn. In past years they have been very good and have provided some good low flying photo opportunities (see my post of the deployemnt in April http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthre...ight=TAC+Blaze). Some of my photos were taken on the path to Crammal Linn waterfall, and you can see the upper part of the Irthing gorge in one or two of the photos. (Photos of the waterfall are shown below)
A short Health & Safety announcement now follows: Anyone going onto the ranges should be aware that all civvies should keep to footpaths on the edge of the MoD range and ideally be visually obvious to any military but invisible to other photographers!!

There is a footpath that links Gilsland Spa to the Popping Stone, and one that links beyond this to Crammal Linn - this is over 4 miles though, so the alternative is to drive to the waterfall and use the small parking area near to it, and then go back to Gilsland Spa for the short walk down into the gorge and for cuppa at the hotel - there is also a cafe in Gilsland. (orange line is road, green and purple are footpaths)

Regards
Chris

Re path - there is a compacted stone vehicle track / path on the south side of the reservoir that runs from a small (2 car) rough parking space/gate on the A68 to the dam and then possibly all the way to the tip of the NE extent of the reservoir. A couple of weeks ago paths across fields and common land however were very wet and not good!
The reservoir was made all the more colourful in the sunlight by a bright green algae bloom just below the water surface and trees were colouring nicely. Some interesting toadstools too with all this wet weather of late.

Regards
Chris

Re: Proposed meetup : Northumbria autumn

With all the good autumn colour at mo do we want to fix on a possible date, midweek or weekend?
I would reckon on the next two weeks possibly three being the best time for the autumn colour, unless high wind decide to remove all before it! The coming week seems dull and damp with a change coming at the end of the week to brighter cold weather, which is possibly more suitable for photo opportunities

Regards
Chris
