My Blog

As you probably are aware, Ian is working on restoring my gallery here on E-System User Group.

I have recently started a blog to display the photographic themes that I am currently pursuing. These can be found at http://peterd-outandabout.blogspot.com/. I have also joined another three forums but perhaps its not appropriate to provide the details of those here.

I would welcome any comments regarding my blog either here or at the blog itself. Its my first attempt at blogging so please take this into account. When my gallery is restored, I shall of course upload here again.

Thanking you all

PeterD

Blogging - technical stuff. You're braver than I am :-)

Langstone eh? Have you been to Bosham? I went there on a flying business trip there and took some pictures in the village (tide was out).. plus a couple of nice shots from the crypt under Bosham church. Recommended location.

Hi Pete,

I know what you mean, Bosham is a very pretty villiage on the West Sussex coast. My wife and I love the place. When the tide is in they can have a problem though. All the houses around the church, on the shoreline, have walls placed at the entrances to prevent the sea from entering the property.

If anyone is passing through the area, I agree with Pete that this is a very worthwhile place to visit. Steeped in history and largely unspoiled. In the summer you get coach loads of people arriving to visit the viilliage. From a photographers point of view, its ideal.

As for the blog, its the only way that I can share some of my images at the moment but, hopefully that will change soon.

Re: My Blog

The blog is looking good Peter. And the photos arn't half bad either! One readability thing, I would say it needs some more space around the Introduction passage. Perhaps one blank line before the word Introduction and 2 at the end of that section to put some space before the entries start.
I like the way you include info on locations with the photos.
All the best
Phil

Re: My Blog

Thanks for your comments Phil and I have incorporated your suggested changes.

One other problem I want to solve is how I can give the option to see a higher quality image by clicking on it. It must be possible as I have uploaded large files to the blog site.

Re: My Blog

Peter

Nice to see you posting your blog details. I have commented.

On the benefits of the blog i have found that your pictures don't get too lost amongst the feedback. Plus the archiving features are good. But, the need to drive people to go there is the downside. I have an RSS link on my web-browser which tells me when you have posted something new to look at. But I am not typical. It is easy on a mac.

IDEA The thought that went through my mind is why Ian doesn't host these blog type facilities on site? It would put in one place what I am looking for (people interested in camera, my subject and informational content) in my home site.

At UK Butterflies they do have individual blogs and it works well. I like this photographer. http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/blog.php?u=1281 But that is just an example

The blog shows individual progress much better and allows for special interests and groups to communicate. Integrating those sort of facilities here seem a natural extension to me.

In the meantime setting up blogs on blogger is easy and free.

Peter

Re: My Blog

Hi Peter.
I don't have an account so am not as helpful as I could be, but here is one way that might work:
You want to go back and edit your post, so you can change the text/images etc. At the top of the editing window, by the tools, it should say "Compose" and next to it "Edit HTML". Click on "Edit HTML".

Now, I don't know whether they will show you the raw html, or some slimmed down version, but you want to look through (or use your browsers find function) and go to the line that begins:

<p>Southmoor is located on the edge of Langstone harbour. It...

Further along that line it will say:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205450404944898994" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_5JhRB3431qQ/SD15kEqna7I/AAAAAAAAABE/0tc_XMgvdnI/s400/Swan+Family-2.jpg" border="0" />

This is the code to display your first photo.
You need the link to the larger version of the photo. You say you have uploaded one, so perhaps if you navigate to it on blogger/picasa web album and make sure you can see it nice and large. Then right click and select Copy Link Location.

Now back to your blogger editor and the Edit HTML page.

Edit that line I mentioned before, and immediately before "<img id=..." you need to add <a href="RIGHT CLICK AND PASTE BETWEEN THESE QUOTE MARKS SO THE LINK TO THE IMAGE IS PASTED, DO NOT DELETE THE QUOTES" title="">

Then scroll along the same line until you find:
Swan+Family-2.jpg" border="0" />
and add </a> to the end of it.

That should do it.

However, there has GOT to be an easier way of doing it! I just can't explore as I don't have an account. Perhaps someone familiar with it will be along soon to help out more.

All the best,
Phil

Re: My Blog

Hi Peter

Thanks for your comments and I think you have a great idea re Blog links from here. I note that a number of people here also have blogs and, like us, provide links with their user name signatures. Your idea for a list of these and the themes would benefit all and increase the number of hits received. Its another branch of our hobby and one that I am determined to learn from. Must also get skilled in PP though too - another challenge!

Thanks for the info Phil. Yes there is a HTML tab and I shall look through the code and try your suggestion. I shall also look more closely at the instructions - you know what I mean - those things that are provided to help you but you ignore in the haste to get on with it

Have to walk the dog right now (and take some shots with my E500 of course). Back again soon.

Re: My Blog

Peter

If you go to my blog I have added an element at the bottom to demonstrate that as you add the photo blogger gives you the ability to link to a website which could be anything (but for me is your blog).

If you have the larger pictures on a picasa or flickr site then you could hotlink to them. There may be an easier way...

Alternatively if you look at the blogger dashboard you get the chance to add elements or various types some more fun than others. I have included a slideshow. If you click on a picture in that it takes you to my flickr site and you can see the pictures at whatever size they are. This seemed a neat solution?

All the photos you have already uploaded are on a picasa site you need to log in and play around to see how you want to organise and share them. I am still playing and learning too - hence my thing about Ian maybe hosting E site blogs. My pictures could all be here...job done.

The standard approach on websites seems to be try it and delete the failure pages...I've not broken mine too much yet.

Re: My Blog

Guys, I have a photoblog too, but that's not why I am posting. I also run a huge forum www site and have my own dedicated server with ample space and bandwidth. On my site I offer this space to fellow musicians in an attempt to offset the costs of owning and running the server and paying for the services of a System Admin to perform the stuff I know nothing about.

This has been a very well taken up service, and I have many small www sites hosted off my server - each with their own cPanel and domain etc. people who have used my service have all said that they are pleased that their domains seem to appear to be online for almost 100% of the time, and that they are happy to pay the fees I ask for the level of service I offer - sort of a personal touch. I don't advertise or promote myself as a web hosting provider - I only offer this service to my fellow forum users on theMouthPiece.com, and now am offering it to you guys and gals if you want your own blog with your own domain.

What I am proposing here is to offer you guys a similar service, but... with a photoblog software application installed and ready to go all included - for an annual fee of 60 all-in (with the exception of the domain name - which I can procure if required for around a fiver for a dot com domain per annum). To see the type of blog application I would include and install for you - take a look at my own blog, which I haven't updated recently I'm afraid, but it is there... www.mrjohn.co.uk

So, if you are interested, and you would wish to take up this offer, please let me know. I appreciate there may be cheaper hosting alternatives out there, but I will do all the initial setting up and configuring for you included in the price. Would love to help you if you need this type of service. The number of images you can upload for the price is thousands... and you have the usual email addresses and ftp accounts and cPanel access included as well.

Hope to hear from you.

John

Re: My Blog

John

I am interested in getting something more than a blog online and will get in touch as it might be a good solution. I was just trying out things slowly but if you can help get me to my ideal spot to promote my painting and art framing work (which is just at the hobby level but you never know)... it would be great.

Thanks for the offer it is very welcome, and as a fellow mac user you will be able to talk about visual rather than html type stuff..

Re: My Blog

Phil, Peter

Thanks for your posts. I am now doing what I should have done in the first place and look at Picasa. I have downloaded the program and reading the instructions. It looks as though the linking can be done relatively easily but I shall read it all first before acting

John (Musicman)
Thanks for the offer. I shall keep it in mind but I want to first complete what I have started. I may well take you up after I have sorted things out. Its the only way to learn and that is what motivates me.

Re: My Blog

Peter, your site looks nice. I like the colours you've chosen, they seem to compliment your pictures.

John, will think about the site/hosting offer. Does it have to be a 'blog', could it be something else?
