Well Brian, when I whizzed back after the Briefing Session to get a lens all were gone and those holding the 4 x 40-150 lenses were tall, male and ... so I just waited until someone was ready to hand one back and not quite grabbed it but did say Thank You

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I was having problems with the noise from the images (I was using ISO3200 and having exposure problems with the constantly changing lighting levels / colours) so have downloaded DXO optics 10, wow - what an improvement (so much so that I have now purchased it)

You may already have you noise reduction sorted but if not, its worth a look (a lot slower than the other systems I use but for images like these, quite magical )

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

Hi Brian, "Cookie" said to stick about 1600/1800 and if necessary go up to 2000 and I stayed at the lower end of this scale. A little noise was captured, but removed in Corel Paint Shop or Oly Viewer as still not got CO Pro7/8 working here on this laptop yet

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I tried his suggestions Chevvy and couldn't get the shutter speed I wanted, even wide open

Going through my images now and at least 50% are underexposed to the extent its not worth trying to pull the detail out in PP even with the ISO pushed to 3200.

Don't know why it was so different from your position, maybe the longer lenses gave you the chance to get better metering (although I was using both spot focus and spot metering) or maybe the lighting angles were better?

I'd love to have another chance using 50-200 SWD

I decided to use the 3 x 3 (9) focus points, as I felt with the movement and the distance and the size of the subject that would be better

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I also used my own 75 mm for all my shots. Struggled a bit with my settings, took hundreds of images so now down to 15 ok shots which need a bit of manipulation. Nothing stunning but that's due to not being very skilled in this type of photography.
However like Chevvy I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

Claire, not one of us were "very skilled" at this type of photography - given it was a 1st for us all (unless there was a spy within our ranks?)

It was UTTERLY AWESOME a day out and being able to photograph Ballet ! I would like more practice ...

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

we need to get 10 images in to Olympus and have them cleared for public use by English Ballet first, then I guess you may have more than enough to look through

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I see that the first approved images are now showing here: http://ballet.olympus-imagespace.co.uk/approved/

I've uploaded my selection but have no idea how they will go, probably do a "Lead Balloon" impression

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I see why you have to be so careful about what you post, it seems that the dancers need to be in approved positions.

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

I'm told that even a finger out of place can be enough to block release.

Its a tough life being a ballet dancer, everything has to be so precise!

(I've taken a real flyer with a lot of my selection as many of them are in flight - its the only thing I'm good at, shooting "TIFs" - things in flight, so I suspect that I will have more opportunities than most to have got it wrong )

Just a note to say, Ballet fans may find it helpful to view ASH images (aka Cookie) here on Flickr ; for WB ; skin colours and sharpness

Re: Nutcracker Rehearsal 10th December

thanks Chevvy, what a shame he has disabled EXIF in so far as its showing none of the shooting parameters.

Makes me a little less worried about my "lack of sharpness" but he seems to be able to get a much nicer lighting than I did

Shame we didn't get to see the full costume rehearsal, it looks a stunning show in these pics

I would love to photograph an event such as this. Instead I'm getting ready to shoot a drama dress rehearsal at the local primary school tomorrow. I'll be fun, but hey-ho.
