BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

Do either of these look genuine:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=170580487079

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

On the first one, the Olympus logo on the battery label looks right. Seller has confirmed these are genuine.
On the 2nd one the box looks authentic but the Olympus logo on the battery doesn't look right. Letters spaced too far apart. Seller has also hidden item descriptions in past sales history.

Compared in order, with original logo below, here:
Comparison.jpg

Any thoughts?

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

Interesting, the picture on eBay of the second one shows the company name as Olympus Optical CO.LTD when all of mine are Olympus Imaging Corp. Both the eBay ones are missing a 'don't bin' warning symbol, but that may simply be a regional variation.

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

Recently, I bought two BLS-1 batteries. Both came with the original Olympus box, papers, and both were bought from a reputable online photo seller. And yet, one of the batteries had Olympus engraved on top, the other one didn't. Go figure...

The first says "US Seller" in the picture, but is in Hong Kong. Personally, I'd only buy from a Far East source if I or someone I trusted knew it to be legit.

Personally I think the cheaper Uniross ones are better than genuine Olympus ones anyway.

These look suspect - if something looks too good to be true it usually is.

Yes, I'd heard that, but also that the originals are better than the Uniross ones! (post #5 here: http://forum.fourthirdsphoto.com/showthread.php?t=48282)

I can buy the Uniross for 16.00 posted in the UK.

The US seller of the 'genuine' Olympus one wants 3 dollar to ship so total is around 18. He has good feedback for other genuine Olympus batteries but how would a buyer know if they're genuine or not in the short term without proper testing?

IF it is genuine, would folks still go Uniross from personal experience of the two brands, rather than pay 2 more for Olympus?

If you're OK with a non Olympus source, I find that Hahnel products are quite good. Their equivalent is called Hahnel HL-M1. They're usually under 20 postage included if you search a bit, whilst around 25-30 at pĥoto dealers. The Hahnels have a 2-year warranty.

I've heard good things about Hahnel as well. I use Hama BLS-1 equivalents with no problem, and I'm sure they have a BLM-1 equivalent as well.

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

I've been using Hama BLM-1 equivalents for a couple of years - quite happy with them. The contacts are (or look to be) gold-plated, which might be a good thing. Only thing that puzzles me about these equivalents is why they don't come with the clip-over shields that you get with the Olympus originals - feels like a miserably petty bit of cost-cutting.

Looking for "bargains" from unknown sellers on Ebay has never much appealed to me.

I agree
Generally I get stuff like this via Amazon far less mucking around and I like to think the feedback might be more reliable & honest.

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

I've got no idea of the link, but a couple of years ago someone did a comparison of a batch of aftermarket batteries.

As I remember it, the 7dayshop and Uniross ones came out best.

I've got a couple of 7dayshop ones - I think I only paid around 8 each, and they've been fine.

Found it :

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

I should have looked here first!

I recently bought one of these (the one in the second link). It arrived today and I am certain it not an original.

Because:
- It does not have "Olympus" engraved on the top (all my others do)
- The label looks different to all my others (although there does seem to be a variety of genuine labels in use)
- The plastic cover does not fit as well as my others and is made of a slightly different (clearer) plastic
- The label refers to "Olympus Optical Co", my others are either 'Olympus Imaging Corp' or 'Olympus Corp'

However it does not 'feel' cheap or inferior so maybe it will be as good.

One strange point however is that the packaging (box and instructions) do seem to be genuine, or very good copies (even the box states 'Olympus Imaging Corp').

Anyway time will tell if it's any good and if not it was only a tenner.

Re: BLM-1 genuine batteries... or are they???

It's a right dreich and damp up here in Jockland, been raining all day, so I've little better to do than trawl around websites comparing prices etc.

The internet has really educated me as to bargain hunting.
