Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Interesting Bruce. I was leaning to the Note 10.1 with the stylus How much of a backward step is that non AMOLED screen for photos.?

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

It's still a lot better than most Phill. It has the same 2560 x 1600 resolution (in a slightly smaller size), and similar processing power and 3GB RAM. Only you can judge. Somewhere like PC World should have both on demo. If the pen is important to you, then it's a good choice, but with a large screen, I don't feel the need. I used to use Wacom tablets as a graphic designer, but make do with a hi-res mouse on PCs these days. You can get it for about £80 less. If you are going to watch TV or movies on it, I'd recommend the black one. I would find the light bezel too distracting.

The blacks won't be quite as black, as with the Tab S AMOLED screen, each pixel is self illuminated, and when they are off, they don't use any power, so less power used with a darkish film say. LCD as on the Note 10.1 has a constant backlight across the lot, relying on crystals to block the light for blacks. Conversely, if you do a lot of web browsing of largely light pages, AMOLED will burn more power.

AnandTech review of the Note 10.1 here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7378/s...edition-review

I mostly use mine at home on wi-fi, but have 2GB of 4G data on my phone contract that I never use up, so when necessary, connect to the internet on the tablet via the phone as a wi-fi hotspot. Heavy users would want a tablet with a data connection built-in.

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Bruce your choice is even more interesting knowing your professional background in design and using Wacom tablets you put the screen improvements ahead of the s-pen. I was looking at that pen and wondering if I could try a bit of electronic sketching? I've not drawn anything for ages but just felt it would be good to try on a tablet sort of informally rather than buying a dedicated graphics tablet for the pc. I just thought the latter would be overkill for me. To be honest the most use the tablet is likely to get is for reviewing shots taken on holidays and impromptu internet browsing so maybe I should go for the better screen of the Tab S? I was going to check them out at PC world but they've sold out round here not sure where to go now to see the difference for myself. A friend of mine at work has just bought the Tab S too and he's a keen togger (bit of a clue there I guess). He loves it and I admit the images look stunning when he showed it to me yesterday. I just need to see them side by side and play with the s-pen to make my decision. May have to wait till after Christmas I guess. Thanks for that link and the info on the screen. I didn't realise how differently they worked.

Chevvy have you done any sketching on the 10.1 ? or is that pen just a bit of a gimmick?

Phill, ring PC World anyway. They usually keep the demo units in the bigger stores, often before they have actual stock. David Hockney uses his finger on his iPad, good enough for me I'm not a great drawer though.

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Phil, I find I use the S pen on my older (2012) Galaxy Note 10.1 for general interaction with the tablet, so browsing and writing emails (yes handwriting emails works ).
Being a bit of s stickler for keeping things tidy it saves all the finger 'residue' that accumulates without one and is actually quite nice to use. Just a thought.

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

If I could make money like David Hockney then I wouldn't need to worry about which tablet to buy but I take your point. When I get one I'll give both a try.
Huw the screen cleanliness point is a good one and one I can relate to.

Going window shopping today at least and thanks for all the help from everyone. Who knows I may even part with the cash

Have fun spending! BTW, you might also think about cases for the tablet & optional keyboard cases. I decided to 'spend money' on this keyboard case for my iPad Air after using a previous case. http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/macboo...ad-air-ipad-5/

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Good point about fingerprints, I'm very fussy about that too, but usually wipe my finger before using it. The Gorilla Glass 3 on the Tab S has an impressive coating which feels silky smooth, and seems to resist marking well. For me one of the joys of these things is its simplicity and speed to use, and pulling a pen out of a slot is more fiddly.

Good luck Phill, I wouldn't leave it too long, as stock could be getting low before Xmas. Amazon only have 1 Bronze Tab S 10.5 left at £340:
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5" Titanium Bronze Tablet Octa-Core 1.9GHz 3Gb Ram 16GB HD Android Kit Kat 4.4 SM-T800NTSABTU: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5" Titanium Bronze Tablet Octa-Core 1.9GHz 3Gb Ram 16GB HD Android Kit Kat 4.4 SM-T800NTSABTU: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Also a good price on the very good Samsung Folio Case £33 (many are charging £50!):

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Well despite what I said life got in the way and I didn't get to go window shopping yesterday. Anyway did get some time to peruse a few videos though thanks for those links Bruce. So even without having a proper play I decided to buy a Samsung note pro 12.2. Lots of pros and cons and the biggest decision was around the better screen on the Tab S Bruce as you suggested but in the end the excellent sketching ability from the s pen won me over. So then to look at price and wow on the Samsung website they were offering a massive 300 off the bigger 12.2 pro model so it was selling at 349. That tipped the balance for me and I went for one. I suspect the discounts are because they are going to bring out a new version with the better AMOLED screen at some point but no doubt at a price premium. So lets see if they deliver in time for Christmas.

Thanks again to everyone here for their help you've really made this decision process much easier and quicker.

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

That's a bargain Phill! The main criticism of it is the price, and it's a bit big for most people. It's basically a bigger Note 10.1 2014. Happy Christmas!

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Wow as Bruce says what a bargain, well spotted Phill, I'm sure you will be very pleased with it.
I'm almost tempted myself but with the sensible hat on I think I will wait another year to see what develops my old model is still doing what I need of it and very well too

Re: Best tablet to use with an EM1?

Phill, Happy Christmas from me too I know you shall be chuffed to little mintballs with this prezzie to yourself you work hard and you earned it

I got the Samsung 10.1 on advice from Mark in Aus his son is an IT Techie and knows more than a bit about Tablets the only better one was the "then, forthcoming Note" ... but I did not want the Note + £'s more as my needs are quite basic (and Nick plays Chess on it, when waiting for me )
