Adobe Photoshop CS6 public beta hands-on preview at DPNow.com

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Adobe has launched the public beta of Photoshop CS6, the 13th version of Photoshop. Anyone can download and try the beta for a limited period before the finished version eventually ships. PS CS6 incorporates many minor and major enhancements, including Adobe Camera RAW 7, additional Content Aware functions, added non-destructive editing tools, video editing and if that wasn't enough there is a revised UI and default dark grey look. We've been trying out PS CS6 - find out how we got on.

Re: Adobe Photoshop CS6 public beta hands-on preview at DPNow.com

Out of interest Paul, was your download as big as 1.7GB because at four minutes that works out to almost 60 megabits per second download. I guess you could be on Virgin's 100 megabit service or maybe you have been upgraded to 60 megabits on Virgin?

At home we're on 20 megabit Virgin cable broadband and expect to be upgraded to 60 megabits later in the year as part of their free upgrade service. We have 40 megabit service at the office (fast.co.uk who resell BT Infinity) although the measured speed is more like 32-36 megabits. We get the full 20 megabits at home.

I wrote the PS CS6 preview article last night at home and the broadband has been crawling - fixed that this morning by repassigning the router's wifi channel from 8 to 11. Although analysis didn't show any clashing channels from neighbours, it did the trick and is a good tip if you have wifi issues.

Oh goodie, a new version of Adobe Camera Raw so no doubt we have to upgrade if we want to process our OM-D raw files natively .......

Is there any way to tell which version of ACR Lightroom is using under the covers? Just wondering if LR version 4 is using ACR V7 already.

Ciao ... John

Yes, LR4 and PS CS6 use ACR7. But of course you can use the free DNG RAW converter.

Thanks Ian. The DNG converter is all very well as an interim solution, but workflow-wise it's a PITA and eats your disks! So one answer could be to upgrade to LR4 to process the raw files and, for those cases when LR doesn't go far enough, open directly in PS CS x (where x < 6). LR4 upgrade is relatively cheap, I'm sure PS CS6 won't be!

Hi Ian, yes it was the full 1.7GB and I am on virgin, I was on the 20mb but they gave me a free upgrade as a sweetener as I have the full package and have been with them for a long while.

From what I have been told speed varies depending on how near you are to one of there main servers and I am pretty close too one.

I'm allowed 1GB of transfers a month on my wireless internet so I'm not staying offline for nearly two month to download it.

Mac Version is only 984 MB wonder if anything is missing or is it just down to the more efficient coding of Mac software?

With the Windows version you get the 64 bit and 32 bit versions, perhaps Mac's cannot run the 64bit application?

I use a free Android app in my phone called WiFi Analyzer - it's brilliant. There is now an iPhone version:

http://sites.google.com/site/iphonewifianalyzer/

The app can even recommend the best channel to set your router to.

You need a new broadband supplier! Virgin slow you down if you exceed about a gig in the morning. There are no holds barred parts of the day, but you can be restricted I think in the morning afternoon and peak evening times - but you still get a generous allowance at those times and if you exceed it your are only slowed down temporarily.

At the office we have a 45GB allowance per month, but that's more than enough for us and our uploads are unmetered.
