Farlington Marshes Meet

Many thanks to PeterD for organizing the event.

It was good to meet up with other members of the group. Despite the cold the weather stayed fair, we got some sunshine and saw some wonderful birds. A pub with a wonderful view for some late lunch

Whether I succeeded in capturing any decent images of them I am about to find out. I am sure that others with their monster lenses will have much to show.

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Absolutely, it was brilliant! Thanks Peter

Thanks too to Jamie Marsh for taking us round, and pointing out various birds which we could look at through the digiscope, and the trainee too, although I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember his name.

Here's the group picture - of course I made sure everybody was staring straight into the sun.

Left to right are PeterD, Adagio, Jamie Marsh (HWT Reserve Officer), Mrs Adagio, Sapper (minus credit card), HWT Trainee, MickL. (Please correct the names if they're wrong.)

I've uploaded it to the general "Member Meets" folder, because I can't seem to make a new folder in there. Can anybody help out please?

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Hi all,

Sorry I have not posted anything since our meet but I am having all sorts of computer problems which is stopping me running my PC for more than 30-40 mins at a time. For some reason, my hard disc is continually getting smaller in capacity. Starts with 49Gb free and ends up with 0Bytes free. It's preventing me from saving anything and I cannot use system restore as all my restore points have been mysteriously deleted.

I still have a bit of time left before I have to re-cycle. Thanks to all of you who could attend. I really enjoyed meeting you all. The weather turned out to be kind to us and the Lapwing and Avocet were kind enough to put on a flying display as we arrived.

The weather across the country was bad which meant some of you could obviously not attend. I shall be putting on another visit in the new year. I am also going to look into hiring a boat (for the summer months!) to tour Langstone and Chichester Harbours. I shall let you know the hire costs, which obviously we shall have to share, and options to see how muchinterest there is.

I would also like to thank the HIWWT for their assistance in this visit.

When I get the chance I shall upload my images of the day.

Cheers for now and Best wishes to all for Xmas and the New Year

Glad the meet went well, and I am sorry I couldn't make it. I am looking forward to seeing some of the shots from the session, especially the bird shots.

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

I have come to the conclusion that my 70-300 does not get me close enough

These are just recognisable as Avocets with a lone Lapwing amongst them.

These Brent Geese flew off just as I was getting within range

So I thought I would try something that kept still

Suggestions please as to the best way of convincing my wife that I really do need a Bigma

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting your images and I see that you got the Little Egret very well. This you said was a great objective of yours.

I have had major problems with my computer for over a week which has prevented me coming on here. I have had a nasty virus attack which destroyed my 'System Restore' points, caused my hard disc to become full whenever I switched on (I think it was continually increasing the paging file size) and destroyed my on disc backup system preventing me from restoring the system files. Anti Virus and Trojan software failed to detect it and therefore I could not remove it. The solution was to buy another hard drive, install Windows 7 and I am still in the painful process of trying to recover my data including all my images. It's a painfully slow task as I cannot use software to make the transfer. So far it is looking good and I hope to be back fully on-line by the end of the week. Just what I wanted for a Xmas present.

I hope all of you had a good Xmas and wish you all the best for 2010. Maybe a replacement for the E3 will be announced soon.

Dave

Specially like the Little Egret and ducks although I regret I still cannot remember what they are despite Jamie's tuition

Peter

Sorry to hear of your woes, what anti-malware were you using? Hope some images appear soon

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Thanks Peter & David.
Hope you get your pc sorted Peter, it's a blessed nuisance to be without I reckon.
I will try to identify the little ducks from my book.
No1, Lapwing.
2, Brent geese.
3, Egret.
4, Avocet.
5, Duck!
No doubt someone will correct me :-)

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Dave
All your IDs are spot on. The last is Wigeon-another migrant to Langstone Harbour for the winter.

Thanks both for your comments re my PC.. Slowly but surely I am rebuilding it. I have to be very careful not to re-import the virus and also not to lose my images.

I have tried Malaware and a couple of others from the Internet. I have also used Microsofts solution to finding and killing virus' and Trojans. All with no success. For this reason I am taking the slow but sure approach to minimise risks. By the way, just love Windows 7.

I shall post a few images later today on this thread.

Re: Farlington Marshes Meet

Thanks Peter.
Trouble is that my book does not show widgeon with a yellow rump. I assume one is male & other is female?
Gotta say that I love my mac. I've not had a virus since I changed a couple of years ago. Lots of other trouble though, like not able to use Paint shop pro and some other progs.
Not much help to you I know:-)
Look forward to seeing some pics later.

This is a mixed flock of ducks. Th ones with the yellow rump are Teal Males. You can just make out the green stripe to the side of the head in the duck to the left. The Widgeon have a pale stripe from the bill, over the head and down the back of the kneck.
