A Forest of Dean Free Mine

Enjoyed a week in the Forest of Dean, spent one morning on a visit to Hopewell Colliery one of the Free Mines. A fascinating experience well worth a visit, the guide is a Free Miner and has a rich source of anecdotes relating to Forest of Dean mining.

Re: A Forest of Dean Free Mine

Fascinating, but I wouldn't want to go down there!

Re: A Forest of Dean Free Mine

As someone who can feel claustrophobic in the middle of the Sahara the idea scares me to death, which is a pity as it looks like a great photo opp. I particularly like the colours in the shot of the dangerous tunnel.

Re: A Forest of Dean Free Mine

I'm rather impressed with that first shot. Did you get a chance to go down the caves (i.e. mine) at Clearwell as you were in the area?

Don't think I'd fancy those tunnels, either...but the miner would be worth capturing more. An interesting, but claustrophobic experience...!

Re: A Forest of Dean Free Mine

Looks very civilised - all that beautiful masonry instead of pit props, & handrails for assisting the elderly miners at the end of the shift
