Lies, damned lies, statistics and tabloids

I spent some time on Sunday in the constituency that was labelled a few years ago as having a lower male life expectancy that Iraq. What they don't say - since it wont sell papers - is that this constituency was home to 3 extremely large homeless hostels for men. There are some great images to be had

Re: Lies, damned lies, statistics and tabloids

A few years ago I met a Greek doctor hillwalking in Glencoe. He told me he worked in a Glasgow hospital. I asked him why come to Glasgow to work and he replied that he was a cardiac surgeon and that "Glasgow is the heart attack capital of the World"! He said that he sees hearts on 20-30 year olds that are like 70-80 year olds, because of poor diet and drink.

Nice shots, Jamie, with some great details.

Re: Lies, damned lies, statistics and tabloids

Jim,
Part of the reason I was over in Shettleston constituency is that's where my Dad still lives - he's 85 and his mother was 85 when she died. His neighbours are all the other side of 70. There was a very recent article reputedly from a cardiac specialist that stated Trinidad and Tobago was the heart attack capital of the western hemisphere and another that said Delhi would be the world's heart attack capital by 2020. As my title suggests it depends on the statistics you choose to take and those you choose to ignore. Funnily enough there was a recent survey where a red top was looking for the fabled deep fried mars bars in Scotland and found it very difficult to get it. That's because according to one fryer it knackers the cooking oil. Not quite so good copy.

Re: Lies, damned lies, statistics and tabloids

A sunny day in Glasgow? That'll be it for the year then.
Very nice picies. It always looks crisp in that light.
I should go through more often. There's lots of good architecture in Glasgow. I was photographing stained glass in the Cathedral the other day.

Duncan,
I was in the cathedral on doors open day weekend - I found the stained glass hard to photograph. Here's my one saved attempt.

I think the ceiling in the Blackadder Aisle is great - someone with a sense of humour must have been responsible for this.

Like the pics - and the commentary.

I once heard someone illustrating a statistical discrepancy.

1. The most common last name in the world is? No not Smith it is Li (pronounced Lee).

2. The most common firstname is? No not John - Muḥammad (and various other spellings).

3. Statistical discrepancy is you will very rarely meet any one called Muḥammad Li.

Re: Lies, damned lies, statistics and tabloids

Great shots of a great city.

The worst bit about Glasgow is that they haven't got LA1 (Glasgow's first Atlantean bus) in the new Transport Museum. I worked on that bus in the late 1960's. They have until Xmas to get it sorted, when we're up visiting our daughter.

John,
If you are visiting and are keen to see Glasgow Corporation Buses contact these guys and see if you can get a tour whilst you are up -
http://www.gvvt.org/
http://www.gvvt.org/stocklist/stocklist.html. LA1 is in there.
I went during Open Doors weekend and it was fascinating - who'd have thought there were so many people prepared to buy municipal buses.

Cheers. I'd just like to have a nostagic look around LA1. See if I can still get a Daily Mirror in the place you put the used tickets. Nice it's in Bridgeton as well, I was based at Knightswood but we got lost one night trying to get the last bus there after we'd finished the run, we had to keep stopping and asking people the way - after the pubs had chucked out.

I have some bits and bobs left. I intend to use this as my Scottish Passport should the need arise:
