Infra red converted camera body for hire?

As a result of the discussion here:

http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13694

..I'm seriously considering the idea of offering an IR converted body to the site's Olympus gear hire stock.

It will probably be a Pen E-PL1 to start with as this could be used by both Four Thirds lens users (with an adapter) and Micro Four Thirds lens users. But if the service is popular enough I may well source an IR-converted E-System DSLR body as well.

Can I just take a straw poll to see if anyone here would be interested in hiring such a camera body?

Incidentally, we do have continental hire customers, but there is an extra cost to the shipping. Nobody has hired from the USA yet, probably because of the high shipping costs.

So what do you think?!

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

As someone who's done IR work in the past, i think it's a great idea.

I wish I could find someone/somewhere who'd be willing to convert MY EPL-1 on a tight budget.

I used to have a converted E420 but that had to go to replenish my empty coffers. I miss it

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

I would be interested although it is about 50 years since I did any IR. At least there will be no need to keep the loaded camera in the fridge. What about IR flash? I still remember the smell of flash bulbs dipped in gelatine dye to give IR flash.

IR flash - would this be popular? Most examples of IR photography are landscapes.

You can do it, for a still life for example. Flash seems to be very similar to sunlight. Not saying you should do it

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

I can't think of any real use now but in distant past (~1963) I tried IR film with coated flash bulbs for night wildlife shots. If one was lucky there was not enough visible light to scare the subject away. Now one would just use very high ISO or an image intensifier.

Ian,
There's a sale on eBay from the US of an IR E-1 which details the company that does the conversion if that's any use to you.

I've just bought a converted E500 from him

He accepted an offer below the asking price so if anybody is interested in the E1 it would be worth putting in an offer. I paid 280 which I thought was quite good as I wouldn't need to pay postage to US and I get to keep my back up E510.

Now I wait with excitement for it to arrrive, I am hoping I might be able to get out with it over Easter, mind you I have not heard good things about USPS so I will have to wait and see!!

Thanks for the pointer Jamie.

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

Oh, I'm sooooo tempted! An IR converted E-1 for $495 (just over 300)!

Postage is a bit steep (not surprising comming from the States) but if he would accept an offer of $450 that would cover the postage.......although VAT of about 60 would be due.

Think I'll sleep on it.

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

I managed to knock him down from $525 to $450, so definitely worth an offer. Of course I have no idea what I will have to pay in tax but I still think its a good deal.

If you get the E1 we could have an e system IR day out

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

In principle it looks like we will be going ahead with getting an E-PL1 converted to IR. It will probably take a couple of weeks or so. I'll let you know when the camera is converted and back with us.

Re: Infra red converted camera body for hire?

A quick update; we've received an ex-demo E-PL1 body from Olympus and will be sending it off for IR conversion shortly

Thanks John. It will be converted to 720nm which will enable false colour IR photography as well as post-processing to the more common luminous mono type of results.

The should be back with us in about two weeks and we'll spend a week or so testing it. If anybody is interested in hiring the converted IR Pen from around the end of the month onwards, please get in touch to reserve dates.

I've not yet sorted prices, but there's no obligation if you just reserve days at this stage.
