David,

You will be surprised just how many times a month that sketch gets brought up by customers or even used when someone actually wants a fork handle !

Hi Ron,

Yes that's right, if it's a dry day I always make an effort to put such a display outside. Trouble is we have not had many 'dry days' during the last year

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

That is a very evocative photo Ken. I suppose it is a museum somewhere? I can't help thinking that business must be rather sluggish in the carpet beater and tin bath trades these days. You have brought back memories of hanging rugs over the washing line and beating them with the cane walking stick which we used. The satisfying thwack, the puff of dust and the way the tail of the rug flipped up around the cane provided one life's greatest simple pleasures.

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

As you get off the ferry from Uig to Tarbert on Harris there is a great hardware, agricultural store, come whatever store on the harbour near the TIC.
They have a lot of stuff stacked up outside and when they close for lunch they still leave it out front.
Wonderful place. And they sell fork handles.

This could change - it did for a while during the Comet wind-down.

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

I think the law needs to be changed to protect the consumer, putting pre-paid orders and vouchers at the top of the list of creditors. The anministators/liquidators would then have to work just that little bit harder to save the business in order to cover their fees!

Nope, it's on the main street, The back of the ground floor is Hardware - nuts screws washers and bolts. They don't sell wood - amazingly.

If you're going to visit, drop me a line and you can park at ours. It's free.

One last anecdote. I went in years ago, before I lived in Morpeth, and asked Young Miss Smailes for a sink brush. I described it to her and to her horror she didn't have one in stock. She went through the bristle brush catalog and it wasn't there. "I'll get you one" says she. I went in a month later and there it was. "It was lying round the house". 50p.

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

Many "Shops" are not as they seem ... for example "Tesco" is not just a retailer direct via its stores but also operates a "SUPER Market" in that Suppliers can BUY a SPOT at then end of Aisles Also many chilled foods are not BOUGHT by Tesco to re sell - they just offer the provider space this seems good - BUT the provider takes the hit on unsold returns and out of date stock

AMAZON is not just a Warehouse distribution behind the direct sales website - it also offers a "Store and forward" service to many of its Retailers some of which it may undercut or some may undercut Amazon Indeed, if you look carefully, Amazon no longer stock the whole range but tend to provide Special offers

So retail sales to all of us is going around the Distribution Wheel with the Hub being stock and internet and the spokes being various outlets

Many Car garages now sell 4 or 5 Makes NEVER would have been allowed in 1980's but now the margins are sooo small they even sell the competition (whether they bought it (Mercedes/AMG; BMW/Rolls Royce/Mini ; VW bought Skoda and SEAT)

ahhh Mark Knoffler ... is soo good

Most motorcycle shops are multi franchise as it is the only way to survive. Honda have more than once pushed there dealer to be Honda only. Most have failed to make a living from one make.

Jokes aside, a number of high street businesses only stay for a short period because they are offered lower rent and rates for a set time. When the rent and rates rise they can't make it pay.

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

Well I guess I have to thank Jessops, on the one hand, because they were great for having a love/'hate' relationship with Olympus, and the time to buy was when they went through the 'hate' phase!
So my (and a few other E-Group members) E-30 at a bargain price was thanks to Jake Ward of Jessops finding a few boxes of unwanted stock on odd shelves dotted around the country!
But I always did my research before walking into a Jessops store as staff training seemed to be basic at the least. Interestingly, they opened a really superduper new store in the Metrocentre in the latter part of last year, which for the first time showed off the range of competing DSLRs and CSC cameras pretty well - staff training and presentation was improved, although I had a wry smile after chatting to a couple of staff and being told that with my knowledge I ought to work for the company . . . phew!!
The big concern now is the lack of reliable cameras shops with a good product range, reasonably knowledgeable staff and the opportunity to try a good hands on test - sight unseen may give good prices but lots of potential handling issues.

Re: Jessops to go into administration?

I can remember back in the 70's when most of jessops dealings where by mail order, they had two shop's head office in leicester and a shop on the finchley road in london, the price list was a double broadsheet with no pictures just name stock no & price.
