Metz SCA adapter and E-1 and E-3

Does any one know?
How good is the current Metz SCA adapter in emulating the FL50 flashgun when used with the E-1 or E-3,
a four year old SCA3202 with a Metz 54 MZ-3 flashgun did not support the auto functions with the E-1.

I have a 44 MZ-2 which no longer works but when it did it was like the old FL 40 no FP this was with an E-1. I did here some where that the SCA 3202 was made with future upgrades in mind. I don't know if any have been made.

Thanks for your comments

I have emailed the importers of Metz kit asking for information - so far no response - if I get any info I will post it here just in case it helps anyone else.

Metz has a compability guide here:

When you've selected the requested combination scroll down to see the result.

Thanks for finding the chart - from what I can see even the latest adapter only supports automatic flash - no TTL etc - ie minimal interaction with the camera so a very poor third cf the FL50. Pity really

Re: Metz SCA adapter and E-1 and E-3

Just had a reply from Metz confirming that I have a boat anchor:-

"Due to It's age the 54 MZ 3 is not compatible with the new Four Thirds
TTL system.
You will still be able to use it in Auto and Manual modes via the SCA
301 standard adapter.

For full TTL you will require the 54 MZ 4 I + SCA 3202 M6, or the 58 AF
1."

Re: Metz SCA adapter and E-1 and E-3

I bought a Metz 44 AF 4O for use with the E500. According to the web site it should work with the E510 and E3 too although I've not tried it having subsequently bought an FL50

Re: Metz SCA adapter and E-1 and E-3

I have a Metz 45 CL4 flashgun and an SCA adaptor for the E1.

It doesn’t work at all well unless you just want connectivity and are happy to use the flash in Auto mode.

The problem with digital cameras and the E1 in particular, is that digital cameras fire a short test flash a few milliseconds before the main flash. On most cameras the two flashes can be seen, but on the E1 the interval is so short that only one flash can be seen. (On my Canon for example, two distinct flashes can be seen, and this is sometimes enough for children to blink their eyes!)

This means that the flashgun has to fire twice in very short succession, and the electronics in many of the older guns is just not up to this.

The auto mode on the Metz guns is good enough for colour negative film, but sadly, is not usually accurate enough for digital cameras with their limited dynamic range.
