Nope, definitely not

I'm strictly shooting for my own pleasure. I went M43 for it's comparatively low price and small size when I got tired of dragging around my DSLR.
I've never felt seriously tempted by the E-M1 because of its size as well as it's price.
As Olympus have publicly stated they're pursuing the "profitable professional market" then this isn't aimed at me.

For the Pro sports photographer I'd have thought the main size advantage of M43 would be the lenses. A slightly larger body coupled with the existing PRO and some new telephoto lenses would make an attractive sports camera.

As others mentioned 2020 is an Olympic year in Japan as well as the 100th anniversary of Olympus so it all makes lots of sense.

Doesn't appeal to me at all but that's OK

A new PEN-F might be a different kettle of fish though

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

So, the E-M1X is 144 x 147 x 75mm - that's quite a chunky camera. I thought the G9 was huge and that's only 137 x 97 x 92 mm.

Here's some comparisons:

E-M1 Mark II: 134.1 x 90.9 x 68.9mm
Panasonic G9: 137 x 97 x 92 mm
Canon EOS-1D X Mark II: 158.0 x 167.6 x 82.6mm or
Nikon D5: 160.0 x 158.5 x 92.0mm.

Even if it does make tea, this is definitely not for me!

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Good luck to Olympus if this is indeed the sports professional camera that will put them on a par with other makes of professional equipment. Makes some kind of sense as well when you consider the recent PRO F/1.12 lenses and the possibility of another PRO grade long zoom.

It may not appeal to many amateur, hobby, or travel photographers for its price and size but that may not matter. Perhaps we should just bask in its glory.

I just can't believe this will compete with a 1Dx or a D5 once you get to ISO 3200.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Hopefully they will subsequently produce a derivative version (with similar bells & whistles) but having either
  1. a detachable grip
  2. no vertical grip
Presumably it needs the grip space to accomodate a sufficiently powerful battery for sports photographers.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

I think the most urgent thing for Oly to do is to offer an upgrade to the E-M5ii. They should allow PDAF to trickle down to it and add the 20Mp sensor at the very least. That seems more urgent to me than an even higher-end model than the E-M1ii.

I agree totally. The market is shrinking, and aiming at the pro's seems to be the way Olympus are going, but boy they need this to work, and as a format m4/3d's seems limited by its very nature.
I'd love to see a decent long zoom and better low light and focus on a new body or I may be selling my olympus gear and keeping my Fuji stuff.

We'll find out when we know what sensor will be used in it. Leaks (from Simon) indicate it won't be much different in pixel count (maybe up to 24MP) to the E-M1 Mk II but improved in low light & high ISO performance, so I guess we'll eventually find out how good it will be.

That would not be a 'standout' model to have at the 2020 Olympics in Japan though. Japanese companies will want to show off their best for that event.

Latest rumours about the rumours are saying that whatís been measured is an engineering Ďmuleí, which are apparently usually significantly larger than the released version.

Anyone fancy a sweepstake?

Maybe, maybe not. They had to measure RF strengths (WiFi & Bluetooth) at various distances around the body. In other words, the strength measured at the surface of the body where one would hold or touch it etc., as quoted (at 3.7):
"D: Antenna separation distance. It is the distance from the antenna to the outer surface of platform which an operator may touch."
That to me says they provided a camera body pretty close to what it will be with the WiFi & Bluetooth transmitters set at a particular distance from the camera's surface, particularly the grip.

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Interesting.

Anyway, itís going to be a porker in comparison with other m4/3 bodies, apparently with no option to remove the grip. Usefully smaller than the FF competition, but sales are likely to be small in number (still, how many D5s and 1DXiis get sold these days?).

Iím very unlikely indeed to be interested, mainly because of size and weight issues on planned safari trips, but if the rumoured focusing and sensor improvements filter down to a (2020?) E-M1iii that would be a different matter.

I agree 100% with that, although I hope that the E-M1 Mk III comes out just a bit sooner than that.

Who knows (although a lot of armchair CEOs have an opinion!), but I suspect it would do the company more marketing good if they updated the 5ii with a nice 20Mp sensor and better CAF in 2019, and we got the 1iii the year after.
