The cause of all the recent Aurorae

Thought you may like to see this one I took the other day, seeing as folks have been showing some nice shots of the recent auroral displays on here.

Ive posted attempts to capture the Sun in Hydrogen Alpha wavelengths taken with my EM 10 before but had a few problems, I've ironed a few out and now the sun is higher in the sky atmospherics are creating less probs as well.

So here is a full disc shot from the 7th March taken with the OM D EM10 through my Lunt ls60tha scope.

The Oly is fitted with a 2x barlow lens mod I knocked up, (think of it as 2x teleconverter). This increases the image size to just fill the chip nicely. Un barlowed its not really big enough to get any decent surface detail.

Then its take a load of images at 1/200 s for the surface, then a load at 1/6 s for the prominences. I then stack and sharpen in Registax, then colour and Merge merge as layers in photoshop to give a faux HDR image.

That's a cracking shot.

As for the Aurora, it may get better. I've recently read there is a huge inreased energy discharge looming. Won't do radio comms any good so be sure to have pen/pencil and paper at the ready.

How do we know this? We can't exactly see it coming can we?

We can see whats coming round as the sun rotates and if its going to point towards US then we can expect fireworks :-) Theres a few aurora prediction and warning sites on the web that are useful for 9lanning aurora shots
