Photographic holidays/courses

I have been given outline planning permission to research photographic courses. The sort where you go away for a few days and get shown how to "see", how to "compose".

I would prefer the Northumberland coast but really anywhere in the north of England would do.

My question is, has anyone here any first-hand experience of these? I can find umpteen suppliers, but what I'm looking for are recommendations.

Re: Photographic holidays/courses

Way way back in 1997 I did a three day landscape course in Richmond with Derry Brabbs. He knows the Dales like the back of his hand and found some amazing locations. In those days he did small groups, and he shot with Olympus OM gear then. (I've never seen a camera loaded with film so quickly)

According to his website

http://www.derrybrabbs.com/pages/workshops-terms.html

he only does one-on-one these days. Expensive I guess, but he sure knows what he's talking about.

Re: Photographic holidays/courses

Last year - March 2009 - I was given a one day course in the NE of England - Whitley Bay area - with a semi-pro togger called Jason Friend. He specialises in landscape/wilderness and also writes books on the subject. He's no slouch and has had work published in the NZ Wilderness Magazine, Australian Geographic and Outdoor Photography to mention a few. It was quite good in as much that I didn't know what to expect but found it both enjoyable and informative. It lasted from 10am right through until around 5pm with a short break for lunch.

You can find out more here. Places are usually limited to six (6) although he also does do a one-to-one.

At the end of day we were presented with one of his books which is full of pics - from his travels all over the world - with details of the where, when and the gear used.

Re: Photographic holidays/courses

I have done a few of these courses. Great for instruction and locations. The best I found was lightandland.co.uk.
I did a course in the lake district with Phil Malpas and Clive Minnit, familiar to Outdoor Photographer readers.
Not cheap but very good.
I also did one with Ian Cameron in the Glen Coe area, stayed at Lochleven.
That was good too.

Re: Photographic holidays/courses

I just did the Slovakia "Lakes and Waterfalls" workshop it was great, well organised and pain free (apart from my head in the mornings lol).

Matt and Tereska who organises the workshops are fine folk, say hello to them from me if you see them.

Mentioned you to Matt & he did remember you.
Had a good time in the Bavarian national park, now in Prague for a couple of days.
Am seriously thinking of the bird of prey trip in Jan next year.
