Trussed & plugged!

To be more correct, "Glued, clamped & plugged peg holes".
The things I have to do to be able to buy more camera gear.

E-M1 II & 12-40 F2.8 lens.

Now all I have to do is finish it off.

For some light TV entertainment we've been watching the BBC's "The Repair Shop" & someone has brought in a violin at some point so we're waiting to see which episode that will appear in. It will be interesting to see what they do with it (& who works on it).

With great anticipation and shaking hands I opened this post only to find a ruddy fiddle. Anyone else feel cheated? IW.

Let's see who else will open the post tentatively & feel cheated.
Maybe I was thinking innocently when I named it.

Interesting, thanks Ross. Do you have "before" photos, specially of the body? I would like to see what you can rescue with your undoubted skills.

Don't want to spoil it for you, so all I can say it was an amazing bit of work considering the history of the fiddle...

Re: Trussed & plugged!

Very interesting Ross. I am full of admiration for your skills.

I am a big fan of The Repair Shop. It is fascinating to see how Steve the clock repairer, Suzie the leatherworker, Kirsten the ceramics specialist, the two 'teddy bear ladies' and the rest of the experts deal with the problems they are confronted with. I think it was an unexpected, surprise hit for the BBC. Of course, in real life, few people would be able to afford many of the restorations featured.

Ross... It's just NOT "that sort of site"

Good fun though!

Fascinating piece of work, thanks.

Which episode? We've being trying to find it on catch up TV. If nothing else is on that's interesting when we stop for dinner (or rather, while I'm cooking dinner) my wife finds past episodes to watch.
EDIT: I found it The Repair Shop, Series 2, Episode 1, Precious Violin - BBC One.

John
Apart from what's done already (with the pegs holes being too large), the centre join was opening a little & wasn't noticed until the tailpiece was off, but these sort of things are quite often discovered later when everything comes off & a good inspection is done without rushing. There has been a bog repair done on the left sound hole. I'm not sure if I will replace that with a graft yet or not (depends on the amount the owner wants to pay) but at least I can tidy that bit up with some varnish retouching. I will take another photo & post it in this thread when it's complete & sounding like it should. I won't video myself playing it though. That's just for the pleasure of the client.

Not forgetting Bill Paterson's excellent commentary.

Thanks. We have been watching it on ABC iView (internet TV) so will try for that first. I could download it from the BBC if I sign in, but the last time I tried I think it rejected me for being downunder (not in the UK).

Yes he is excellent & I enjoy it when he's done the Royal Military Tattoo as well (for many years).

Re: Trussed & plugged!

Thanks to everyone for your replies so far. As I said above, I will post the finished photos too. I guess I better not take too long to finish it then. Well, the student would like it soon anyhow. He has a cheap Aldi 4/4 violin to go on with at the moment (sounds good & plays fine after I set it up). Thankfully it's better than some of their extra cheap ones (which I will not waste any time on). I was silly enough to buy an Asian set of bagpipes some years ago, just to have a little bit of fun trying it (I have a few practice chanters). After attempting to stop all the leaks (& not really succeeding) & tuning the reeds of the chanter & drones etc., I decided I'll just admire the real pipers playing real pipes instead. Still, it can make a nice wall hanging.
