Missed it!

Well there we were sitting in our garden at about 2:30pm this afternoon, the wife and I when there was suddenly an unfamiliar rumble in the air which got louder and louder. We both stood up and to our astonishment a Lancaster bomber flying at no more than about 800 feet flew overhead. We were absolutely mesmerized, we could actually see the pilot. The plane then banked hard over and disappeared. I was wittering on about not having my camera to hand and my wife told me to go get it in case the plane came back. I thought it wouldn't and so sat down again. Lo and behold it appeared to have done a circuit of Uttoxeter where we live and it came back around on exactly the same course and I missed the opportunity to take any shots. Of course we both got our cameras ready then but the Lanc had flown away. It gave me a real lump in the throat to see it so up close and personal and completely unexpectedly over our house but what a totally missed photo opportunity.

This is to remind myself that I'm sitting indoors instead of out there taking photos!

The old girl is based out of Coningsby in Lincolnshire. I am rather closer than you, and can see the BBMF low flying a few times a year!

But..... never when I have the camera ready....

Re: Missed it!

Just chatting to a bird photography friend and his charming wife by our gate this afternoon when the Vulcan flew over at about 400 ft. As it is based at Waddington just North of here it often follows the Lincoln Cliff (we are a cliff village) when going South. My camera was of course indoors but as it is likely to come back I will be ready next time. It is usually so close that a telephoto lens will be too much.

Hi If the wife says its coming back you can bet your life it will do just that, believe me they have a sixth sense. Bet you'll go get the camera next time if she says it will probably come back again won't you He He.

Re: Missed it!

I'm just down the road from Paullus, heard a rumble at about the same time today, decided I didn't have time to grab camera.....

plenty of time later a Vulcan came directly overhead at about 500 feet with great exhaust plumes.

Moral of the story, grab your camera as soon as you think a shot approaches, you may just get one.

Re: Missed it!

Last weekend Nick and I were sitting on an field gate, taking shots of a Combine Harvester and tractor/trailer when I was distracted by a Sparrowhawk, I turned sitting on the gate still and WoW ! there was a Vulcan ... like a Whisper Jet, no noise she must have been flying into the wind

Rubbish snapshot OOC - but cheer up all of you Enjoy - she was travelling from Bournemouth Airshow to Shoreham Airshow hence north of Winchester

I don't think I have loved a shot of the Vulcan ever since seeing Martins' (fridgemagnet)

Re: Missed it!

As I've said before I used to take BBMF for granted until moving away. At uni in deepest Wales there were basically no air movements, Yeh planes from Valley didn't make it up to us and now airliners don't make me feel anything like a lanc or fast jet.
