The Official Street Thread - post your street pictures here!

Mods, John and Graham, would it be possible for us to have a 'Street' sub-forum, I think there's a few of us who are interested in the genre, and instead of having separate submissions, a rolling thread could be advantageous.

What do others think? Put your hands up if you support the motion, please.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

We already have an area of the gallery for "street photography":
http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/507

But not everyone puts their images there. We don't have sub-forums for other types/styles of photography and if you search for "street photography" the images appear in many different types of thread.

Pictures taken at events have mainly been posted in the event thread, which keeps it all nice and tidy.

Very often I have come across interesting images and discussions by simply scanning the "New Post", some I'm sure I may well have missed seeing if they were in a dedicated sub-forum.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Personally I think we already have the best ratio of topics to forum. I've seen other fora with really complex forum structures, and I've also seen the reverse. I would vote to keep the status quo.

You could always emphasise the topic by putting the word "street" in the header.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

I can appreciate the reasoning behind the request, but where do we draw the line? Do we have sub-forums in just Foto Fare or in Looking For Improvement too? Do we set up similar sub-forums for landscapes, portraits, macro, still life, abstracts, patterns and textures, sports, transport, low light, studio lighting, nature and probably several other categories I haven't thought of? Then some of those categories are quite wide-ranging so do we split, say, nature into sub-categories for flowers, animals, birds and birds in flight? Do we have separate sub-forums for each of the catagories for colour and black and white?

On the other hand, there is no problem with starting a thread entitled, "The Bumper Street Thread" or "Let's See Your Street Shots" and I can make it a sticky.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Ok guys, thanks for your considered reasoning and decision on this.
Not a peep further, well can I just add this: maybe theme based threads would attract greater contribution pictorially, you've no doubt seen it elsewhere - none of us are forum virgins I'm sure - a specific category, eg show us your 'bridge' pictures, and that encouraged others, possibly, to add their 'bridge' pictures (amend the subject as you wish).
Actually, all I was trying to do here by posting this message (thread) was to build bridges

Edit: The decision is very clear, shall we leave it there.
Many thanks.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Steve - I have to agree with the above. Personally, I think we get excellent view rates regardless of subject matter under the existing Foto Fair category.

I love the street scenes too. I have to fumble thru to find them, sorry I'm not the keeper of the flash lite.

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Hi luckychucky,
John Zuiko indicated that he would be prepared to make a 'sticky' thread for street work, 'Lets see your street shots' or whatever the 'team' want to call it. I think it would be quite helpful having all street stuff in one place, rather than dispersed.
The only downside for me is that I will be shooting quite a bit with my GM5 (when it arrives), so will be unable to post. I do have two olympus cameras though, so could participate.
Let's see what others think.

Just added a few more to my flickr album - can't post here because they were taken using cameras from the 'dark' side

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Some nice street shots on your Flickr site Steve. Dwelling on the shots of smokers outside bars, it occurred to me that the smoking ban has had the unintended consequence of thrusting overweight and pasty-skinned people onto the streets for our entertainment. Nice!

Re: Request for 'Street' sub-forum.

Thanks Paul.
It's a good little project to follow, capturing smokers on the street. I'd encourage others to do it. Who knows, people may look back years ahead and say, ah that's what they did, filthy habit!
