E600 w/14-42 for 399.99 @ Currys

Not sure if anyone has noticed this/posted it already, but at 150 off it's going for a damn good price, so I thought I'd draw your attentions to it!

Do remember that this is a feature-reduced version of the E-620. You should be able to get an E-620 with 14-42 for around 500, and that includes an HLD-5 battery grip and spare BLS-1 batter via the current promotional offers. These don't apply to the E-600.

Re: E600 w/14-42 for 399.99 @ Currys

There are E-620s with 14-42mm and 40-150mm lenses on Ebay for under 500 (inc. postage): E-620 2 lens kit

Seems a good deal to me, especially as it should be eligible for the freebies Ian mentions above.

Re: E600 w/14-42 for 399.99 @ Currys

Steve,
If you look closely at the small print the warranty provided is from the seller and they give a '90 DAY DIRECT GUARANTEE BY SELLER' - whatever that is. I've been looking on eBay for some time and many of the sellers of Olympus kit are only offering a 1 year warranty - many of them like this with the warranty being provided by the seller. This means they must be non-EU imports as Olympus Europe offer 2 year warranties. They are probably what some people call grey market imports. I've seen some correspondence somewhere where someone tried to register their new product on the Olympus UK website and it would not allow them to. I'd beware of this.

Re: E600 w/14-42 for 399.99 @ Currys

Absolutely, those eBay products are almost certainly grey imports, doesn't make them bad products, but they won't have a UK/European warranty, in fact unless stated otherwise (e.g. Kerso's products seem to have a US 1 year warranty that will be supported in the UK) they have no manufacturers warranty, so you have to take it in good faith that the reseller will do the right thing if you have a problem.

They are also unlikely to be eligible for the promotions from Olympus UK. It nearly always comes down to getting what you're prepared to pay for including your attitude to risk.

I remember reading somewhere that the E600 was for the USA market only. It only seems to be available through Currys/PC World who must be sourcing it on the grey market.

Ian,
I've been looking at Camerabox for E-620 prices and they sell the body with 14-42 lens for 474.99 but have stated that they don't provide the grip. According to their sales staff they 'source their stock through Europe'. Can I ask if you know who provides the grip - is it Olympus or the seller?
Thanks
Jamie

It's a limited distributor deal, and Currys Group had it on the shelves before anyone in the US new about it (along with the largest German distributor I believe).

Their units certainly carry Olympus EU warranty and support.

It's easy to tell what you have from the warranty card - printed (E) for the EU distribution channels (obviously on mail order you only find this out when it arrives!)

The free grip is organised through Olympus UK and it makes sense that if the dealer did not source stock through the UK, then they won't be supplied with the promotional grips. However, it's my understanding that other countries in Europe are also running similar promotions, so there is a question mark about why Camerabox haven't also received grips from their continental supplier.

But for the UK, Olympus UK can really only vouch for suppliers who source from them - that's my take on it anyway.

But the bottom line is - Camerabox clearly can't include a free grip and Olympus UK won't be able to either, in this case.

That's correct. The E-600 is being supplied By Olympus UK as a special trade deal to DSG (Dixons Stores Group - Currys, Dixons, PC World, and Pixmania). But the free battery and grip promotions are specifically for UK sourced E-620s.

Actually does anyone have one? I've not seen one personally, but I was wondering if there were any issues with RAW converter compatibility because it's not called an E-620?

Ian

they are 499 in Ireland that works out to 449 at todays exchange rate, some of which is explained by the higher VAT rate here. If I were buying one I suppose I would be heading across the border to NI

yep - OM's OK, and you can work round by using EXIFgui or similar to edit the data to mimic a 620 for those that handle that camera.

or you can try this newbie on the block who's current beta already handles it!

You will also note, not available for shop or home delivery, so no stock anyway, they could list it for 10p if they do not have it you can't buy it

My local store has a display model that they were willing to sell last week. It may have gone now though.
