South Australian Outback - No3

At Pimba we take the turn-off to Roxby Downs. Very glad to leave the stream of tourists and nomads heading north to the Centre like lemmings, as we head to the true outback.

Before we reach Roxby we stop at Woomera.

This is a purpose built town placed in the Woomera Range Complex which
covers approx 122,000 sq kms, and is the largest land testing range in the world, to service the personell that worked here. I say "worked" because it is much quieter now with only the occasional rocket launch.
If interested you can read more here.

http://www.defence.gov.au/woomera/about.htm

JFI - 15 kms from Woomera is Nurrungar (aboriginal word for "listen".)
This was a joint defence facility with the US whose object was space-based surveillance.
Closed now - rumours persist that "something still goes on there".

See more here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_...lity_Nurrungar

Whatever- there is a very nice display of rockets in the town centre.

This is what remains of "Redstone" - the rocket that launched Australia's first satellite in 1967. Remains were recovered from the Simpson Desert in 1990.

And a Rolls-Royce engine recovered after firing.

Never knew any of that! Who thought the Aussies would try and launch giant beer cans into space. Now I am intrigued!

One thing you can be quite sure of, is that the contents of the cans would have been consumed before launch.

Didn't recover very well after they fired it, did it? Looks like Joe's scrapyard has had a makeover! Must be a quite strange place, methinks. Thanks for posting.

You are right Keith - it was a bit weird. Makes you wonder how much else is lying out in the desert.
