Bat on Ball

We went the Thornden Country Park (Essex) with the family over the week-end and on the way in I spotted a cricket match in progress

I didn't have much time to stop and watch (cries of, "Come on Granddad, come and see what we are doing!" put a stop to that ) but did manage to grab a few "Bat on Ball shots from over the fence

Its something I only do once or twice a year so was pleased that the EM-1 + 75-300 still remembered how to time the shots for me

unlike this lad who got his timing completely wrong and missed the catch (but didn't seem to worried about it)

Re: Bat on Ball

Nice, this is that game were the team that are out try to get the team that is in out, so that the team that is out can get in, and the team that were in and are now out try to put the team that was out and are now in, out?
Strange game.

Re: Bat on Ball

thanks Ed, I love that "explanation of the game of cricket for a foreigner" and all the confusion that arises

I must confess its not a game I understand completely myself, but its nice to watch for a while on a sunny day

Re: Bat on Ball

Great shots with the ball Brian. Were they single shots or did you machine gun the strokes and pick the best? I must admit I'd have tried the latter and probably have got lots of oof shots.

Re: Bat on Ball

Thanks Phil, its my usual, AF-S, small single point focus with 10fps in a short burst of 3 technique Phil.

All in focus (as I was more or less perpendicular to the batting strip), but it helps select the precise moment I was after.

These were the only sequences I had time to shoot, so the success rate was pretty good (I guess it always best to quit whilst ahead )

(I've just finished reading an article in this months Practical Photography on how Pros shoot sport and they tend to use the same basic technique (although its more usually AF-C). 150 frames for 1 image in one case, so if its good enough for them I guess I'll stick with what works )

Re: Bat on Ball

Nice collection Brian. Shame they couldn't have obliged you with some bails flying and stumps akimbo!
