Re: Picture trail

I learned recently that what we have there is an orchestra of avocets.

Not many people know that...

That's a new one to me. After a bit of a rummage I found this site with a few more collective nouns for birds. I particularly liked 'A commotion of coots' and 'A quilt of eiders'.

New one on me, I wonder if it also applies to American Avocets.

This Wikipedia list contradicts some of the ones on that list.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...ery,_by_animal

I can't work out why it's a bellowing of Bullfinches. They've never struck me as loud or particularly vocal.

Hmm, I think some of those are just made up by the author.

It's a Convocation of Eagles and a Parliament of Rooks but "a Quilt of Eiders" and "Invisibleness of Ptarmigans"

This is a more believable source.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animal_names#T

Little Quill Lake

-40 at the time. The ice was thick enough to drive on and there was Snow Buntings flying past me to roost in the vegetation around the lake.
