Focus on Imaging 2009 report

I have produced a pictorial report from my visit to Focus on Imaging at the Birmingham NEC, yesterday, including some video footage.

Has anyone else been?

Re: Oly deals at the show

It paid to walk around, I was interested in the 8mm fisheye which you could get from CameraWorld for £539.

Yep I went had fun wondering around and spoke to a very nice chap at the Olympus stand who let me play with the 8mm lens. Did not buy one in the end.
Learnt some stuff about Scanning (Epson stand) and a really interesting talk on 5x4 photography, would love to get one of those cameras.

Seemed to be loads of people in there in the morning and plenty of cash being spent ~ression?, what ression?~

Thought about printers, my friend got an Epson 3800 printer for £749 at the show, normally these are £950+ if you search online.

Lots of Olympus stuff around as well.

Me? got a new tripod, bought film, books, and magazine back issues

Re: Focus on Imaging 2009 report

Had a good look around yesterday afternoon and had a play with the e30 but held on to may cash. Well... apart from the pile of good but cheap paper from RK photographic... Oh, and a DP1 to play with.
There seemed to be a lot of people there - more than last year - and some brisk trade being done in the shops despite the crunch.

[QUOTE=Ian;38392]Here's some deals 1st Cameras were doing at the show:

Just shows you need to shop about and not be fooled by 'show' offers, some of the lens' are a bit pricey e.g 50-200SWD 'show offer' £845, Park Cameras £769, 35mm macro 'show offer' £175, Park Cameras £159 etc etc

Buyer beware

I am going up tomorrow to meet Brian and others from the UKPSG. Would like to splash some cash but I reckon you have to know the 'normal' prices and as has been said already, don't be fooled by 'show specials'.

Re: Focus on Imaging 2009 report

Spent today wandering around the show drooling over all the gear, but my credit card stayed in the wallet. Mind you, with the show discounts I could have saved several hundred quid, so perhaps with the money I saved I should think about spending it on some Oly gear

Handled an E-30 for the first time: fits the hand very well, and surprisingly light. Unfortunately with my ageing sight I found that even with the diopter adjustment up against the stop the focusing screen wasn't quite in focus: I needed just a little bit more adjustment. A bit strange really because I can get the focusing screen of my E-510 nice and sharp, as I could most of the E-3's on the stand, and all these are supposed to have the same adjustment range of -3 to +1. I say 'most', because there was one E-3 specimen where the adjustment range was nowhere near large enough and I was completely unable to focus the viewfinder.

The guy on the stand said that viewfinder correction lenses were available, but does anyone know if they can be easily obtained? I believe that the E-3 and E-30 lenses are the same.

Re: Focus on Imaging 2009 report

Hi

The lens I want is the 70-300 - but the price is not clear on the photo above (it looks like £2... blur! ) Can anyone tell me how much it is?

Jessops has the lens at £269 at the moment. I have heard rumours that prices are soon to rise because of the recession. If this is true then I would buy now rather than wait - but I would rather wait, as my finances are uncertain at the moment.

Any info/advice would be gratefully received!

Re: Focus on Imaging 2009 report

Someone had it for £249 but I can't remember who...

Interesting to hear about the dioptre on the E30 - When I picked one up to play with I couldn't get a clear view in the finder, took my specs' off and still no clear view the kind Olympus chap suggested I adjust the dioptre which had been set as far as it would go!
Even adjusted for my eyes it still seemed a bit unclear though. Maybe that sample had taken a knock.

After all the wailing over the E30 price in the last few months, we now see at 1st Cameras, a price of £1249 incl the 14-54 II lens.

That doesn't really seem that far out now, looking at the overall price spread of the E3, E30, E520 and now E620.

The 14-54 II has a retail price of £479 at Park Cameras, so that brings the E30 price to £770. That's OK, provided of course you are looking for the 14-54 II, which I just might be, since its the ideal (contrast focus detect) standard lens I'd like to use on the G1. Makes the 9-18 and 14-54II on the G1 a very good ZD pairing for travel, and the heftier E30 the main camera for larger lenses, but with a very similar sensor, and each cam with its own specific advantages.

No, I don't think so. I tried all the E-30's and I couldn't get any of them to give me a well focused viewfinder and when it was as close as it would go various parts were more out of focus than others. I know my eyes are on the dioptre limit but I had no trouble with any of the E-3's, my own E-1 and my E-400. The E-30 was, simply put, dreadful. I could never use it in any way, shape or form (except with LV, of course).

Apparently, the E-30 has a completely new eyepiece display assembly, etc. I quite liked the E-30 overall, but the viewfinder has put me off completely.

Back to the drawing board... (me, not Olympus. Well, perhaps Olympus should as well...)

Jim

P.S. The A900 VF was very good, I thought. (ducks quickly )

Re: Focus on Imaging 2009 report

I was there with my Son on Monday. We spent most of our time searching out a decent tripod for him, but stopped by at the Olympus stand. the E-30 seemed very nice indeed. It was a shame we did not go down yesterday, when the E-620 was available. Oh well - there is always next year!

I was hoping to glean more info about the m4/3rds system, and even see the mockup model. However, the chaps on the stand had very little information about it. One of them did say there would be an announcement later this year.

Cheers, Steve.
