I'm working on this site's sibling...

As many of you know, Four Thirds User is being re-worked. The forum has been upgraded to the latest version of vBulletin (two full generations more recent than here on the e-group).

I am currently playing with the image posting tools and have created a thread that documents this topic to a degree.

The look of the site has changed in the last day or so, but it's not final at all - very experimental and is going to change a lot in the near future.

If you would like to play with the options on the new version of the forum please start by having a look at the thread I mentioned above.

Bear in mind that the Four Thirds User forum is a prototype for the eventual future of the e-group!

Here's the link: https://fourthirds-user.com/forum/fo...179786-daisies

Feedback is very welcome!

Ian

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Looks OK, but obviously under development.....

I could not see how to post a photo in the High ISO thread.....

I guess we are used to what we have here, but no doubt we will get used to a new format......

First of all, you do need to have registered in the forum to post on the forum.

You need to upload your image; there is an option to do this as part of the new post editor.

Once the image has been uploaded as an ATTACHMENT, if you do nothing else, it will appear as a thumbnail that can be clicked on to see the maximum size of the image.

But much better is to INSERT a version of your image into the body of your post. You will see 'insert' plus different sizes - just click on the size you feel would be best.

Sounds very similar to Xenforo, but with more choices of 'full size' image at the insert stage.

I added a picture to the thread, edited it then deleted it and it all worked ok.

A nice improvement is that you can see the images posted by someone via their profile page. Here's mine (click on the media tab):

I'm being told that publishing photos with the EXIF metadata intact is bad-practice for online security and is why the forum software strips it out

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Ian,
Just an observation - on posts containing only a small amount of text there seems to be a huge amount of unnecessary 'white space' in the new look (eg: posts #2 & #3 in your "Daisies" thread).
In consquence viewing a thread containing many posts is going to require a lot of scrolling!

Yes, that's unavoidable because of the size of the poster info panel to the left of each post. I will investigate any possibility making an optimisation but I'm not that optimistic.

That's a shame because you can learn a lot about technique from the exif.

Absolutely. Maybe the solution is to find an easy to use tool for copying the interesting camera settings into the post text with each picture, or enabling this for users to do manually themselves.

Apparently, there is concern that nasty code can be embedded into photo metadata. The other concern, which is not really relevant to us I'd say, is that GPS information is a privacy concern.

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

A bit concerning is that all the photos from the old PhotoPost gallery and the intermediate Dragonbyte gallery that we used on FTU are not showing

Another headache!

Ian,
Perhaps you should have a look at this recent item from The Register and decide whether you really want to keep the Facebook & Twitter widgets on your forum websites?
Using them may make your role as a EDPR data controller more onerous.
