Unhappy Lens will not auto focus

I am a convert from Nikon and admitted very confused at this point.

I have just bought an OM-D E-M1 and two lenses: f/2.8 12-40 and 40-150.

The 40-150 works fine in both AF and MF modes.

The 12-40 will only operate in MF mode. In fact, the model selector icon is greyed out. I am at a loss as to how to switch the 12-40 lens into auto focus mode. I cannot find any AF/MF switch on the lens.

Thanks.

Robert

Re: Lens will not auto focus

At the front of the lens there is a ring that can move forwards and back, if you can see a focussing scale then it is in manual mode, so pull the ring forward to hide the focussing scale and you should have auto focussing.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

A common mistake, and easy (too easy?) to move into the alternate mode.

As Stephen says, a common mistake and easy to make. And one made by the best of us. And me.

I hope this sorts you out Robert.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

Even when you know about it you still just take the lens out of the camera bag, attach it to the camera, and spend a few seconds thinking before the penny drops. Its just a bit too easy to nudge that ring.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

I think the lenses were originally shipped in manual mode.

So it is probably a test of user suitability to own the camera - and not RTFMing before using the camera P126 in V1 of the manual and P130 in V2 of the manual

It caught me out when I first got the camera and has enabled me to demonstrate 101 knowledge of the camera to a dealer when I was buying a special filter for the camera and wanted to see how it worked on one of the EM1s in the shop.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

I've lost count of the number of times I've done this with the 17 and 12 primes!! Even now, I still have to stop and think for a few moments why AF isn't working. I wish Oly would put some indicator in the viewfinder to indicate the lens is on MF.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

It's a real pain when your glasses are all steamed up and you see a one-off shot before your very eyes.
Grab the camera snap snap, clean glasses, review photo to see this amazing capture, and it's all fuzzy.

Been there, done that, and I didn't even learn the first time

It (E-M1) should show the focus mode (for lenses with switches, but it depends on which INFO screen is up to when it may be displayed (e.g. Level only shows it if the dials for aperture etc. are changed), or at least it displays 4/3's lenses with MF/AF switches now, unlike previous camera models.

Re: Lens will not auto focus

An idea for a frimware update - the existing AF/MF indicator in the viewfinder (currently dependent on user selected option) could switch to a blinking MF when a manual focus lens (including AF lens with ring in MF mode) is mounted on the camera.
