The best camera is ...

... the one in your hand!

I happened to have the XZ-1 handy (to copy some pictures off my card) and this young blackbird's chirps caught my attention. It allowed me to get within a metre, so I left it at that. Just glad I had the camera close by.

Full size:

and cropped to remove distractions:

Thanks for looking,

Amanda

Re: The best camera is ...

That's certainly true, Amanda and the XZ-1 has rewarded you with a lovely shot.

Hi John and Chevvyf1,

Thanks for the comments. I think he/she fledged about a week ago, as I saw them early one morning, however I think this one's sibling hasn't survived.

They have such a comical character though.

Re: The best camera is ...

Hi Amanda, these are so good that I was moved to check out the dpreview on XZ-1 that I believe Cathrine sometimes uses. I admit to not keeping up with new camera launches but this one, with its super bright F1.8 w/a, 28mm lens, is comparable to the C-5050 of 2002 which served me so well until finally it just wore it out with excessive use.

So, your beautiful bird pics and the review I have just read have me seriously considering adding one to my already overstocked kit ... but why must I do it!

Re: The best camera is ...

Having used the XZ-1 over a few months I've found it an ideal choice for a P&S - pocket and shoot - combination. With the EVF fitted, given my eyesight problems, it proved to be so good. Thanks to REJO I've gone/going down the 4/3 route. My only gripe with XZ-1 - is the standard dangly lens cap which has proved to be a major annoyance.

I tried one of those auto-opening lens caps, but they stick out so much, and the gaps between the "blades" let dust in. I get on OK with the dangly bits.

Thanks Mark. You should do it as it is such a great handbag (or manbag/pocket camera) and it is my take anywhere camera. I sue it to catch shots of meals and things I want to include in my daily journal, but it's so good when you want to travel light. It won't add that much weight to your kit bag! Plus it is great for occassions when you want something more discrete.

I lost my Oly lens cap at Betws coed when I turned the camera on and forgot to take it off first. It bounced off the bridge so my kind husband bought me the pop out one and I find it great.

That's my only gripe with this camera too!

I agree it's a great little compact. I've used it a lot, it's so versatile!

Macro:

Wildlife:

It has a built-in ND filter for slowing things down.

Which I use a LOT

So, from Cathrine's description am I to understand that the XZ-1 lens cap is attached to the camera by a string as indeed was the C-5050's ? I found that more of a blessing than a curse.
I see the XZ-1 is not very expensive and it accepts the VF-2 viewfinder, so I will go into deep think mode and try to convince myself that I cannot possibly do without it.

Mark,

You can attach the cap via a string, but they always annoy me so I didn't, hence the lost lens cap!

I haven't lost mine yet, I keep the string attached

I find it actually more user-friendly than the E-PL3, because of the ring that you use to change the aperture in A-mode and the shutter speed in S- mode etc. A stroke of genius, that. That's what I miss most about the E-PL3 - a faster way to change the aperture or shutter speed, for us who shoot mainly manual, aperture or shutter priority. There is also a company that makes something called lens mate, I have one to protect my XZ-1, but it makes it just as big as the E-PL3. It's just as well to let it run around naked.

Re: The best camera is ...

I don't mind it (the cap) dangling down when I'm taking photos. I usually tuck it into my left hand anyway. Must be a man thing ....
