And you think it's cold here.

As some of you may know I like the Netherlands. All stems from working there for most of 1987.
I try to get back there a couple of times a year.I've always wanted to see the canals frozen, well here you go.

The pros turn right.

The amature

By the Westerkerk,Amsterdam.

Long way home on the frozen Zuider Zee

Are we there yet Mum.

And three of this frozen fountain in Utrecht

All with the E5 and either the 12-60 or 50-200.

Still can't feel the ends of my fingers.

Some extraordinary ice pics you have there Andy ... sometimes I wonder whether this "global warming" thing isn't a huge hoax ...

The Westerkerk buildings appear to be leaning on one another!

Good shots, Andy, but they've cancelled Elfstedentocht because the ice isn't thick enough to meet H&S standards!

I doubt it given the winter we've had so far. A lot of days with + Celsius temperatures and very little snow. Normally at this time of year you'd be having trouble seeing over the snow banks at road junctions but there's only a dusting of snow at the sides of the roads so far this year.

As for skating on a canal, I've driven a loaded grain truck across a lake in Saskatchewan. Because the ice was smoother than the farmland.

A Met Office chap was explaining on Radio 4 the other night that currently the huge winter cold air mass that normally covers the arctic and North America/Canada has swopped places with the milder air mass that normally covers an area much further south.

Re: And you think it's cold here.

Andy an absolutely superb set of images ! There is a big race on the frozen canals ... I forget its name ... I used to go out to Finland for "The Hanki Rally" cars racing on frozen lakes

LURVE the challenging verticals in 3 they sure detract my eyes from the ice and people below and the 2nd of the FOUNTAIN is a real WoW shot of inestimable clarity

Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed these

Re: And you think it's cold here.

I think last week was the coldest I've ever know.

Very interesting though.

Well the cold air mass has returned since I posted yesterday, it's -14.4C with a wind chill of -22 this morning and the entire area is under a snow squall watch.

So the three hour drive I've got to make today will probably be closer to 5 hours.
