The colour of the peg matches his eyes.

Pretty much, yes. My photos have been saved as Vivid so here the raw file is changed to Natural with a small crop to see the finer colour detail of the eye.

Re: Caught in the Act!

That is really strange behaviour Ross. I assume they only steal the blue pegs? I too seem to have a hyper sensitivity to that shade of blue. If I look at a scene all the items in bright blue immediately jump out at me. I don't know if it is the same for everybody?

The male bowerbirds collect blue items for their bower, usually scattered around the bower structure to attract females where they do a song & dance for them. The female comes & inspects the bower & if she likes it then he gets lucky. We have a bower in our front yard & it is interesting hearing & watching his display & seeing the females checking out his bower. It is fairly hidden behind the bushes though. I’ll post more photos of the bower when I get up on my pc.

Re: Caught in the Act!

Here is the bower of a mature male (in our front yard) with his collection of blue ornaments to impress his ladies. This is how it looks this morning.
