Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line)

My daughter needed some railway images for a college project. I deceided I could help with a visit to our nearest preserved railway and so I spent anout 3 hours at the Mid Hants railway.

The railway runs from Alresford to Alton where it connects with Network Rail and shares the main line station. Intermediate stations are Ropley (Motive Power sheds) and Medstead & Four Marks (Buildings & Signalling Departments).

Thought I would share a few images with you.

Alresford
The trains terminate here. On arrival, the locos run round the train and reattach to the other end to return to Alton.

Passengers boarding the Alton train.

34007 Wadebridge running round the train.

Approaching carriages to couple up

Fireman couples engine to train

Crew take a well earned rest

Crewe await departure from the station

The second locomotive on the Alresford to Alton trains was the A4 (streak) 60019 Bittern. Seen here starting the run-round procedure at the station.

As the loco approaches the carriages, the fireman climbs down the ladder in readiness to couple up.

And here he is running alongside the loco as it comes to a halt.

60019 Bittern leaves for Alton.

There are many more images on PhotoBucket taken that day. Each in a folder for the station locations.

Hope it gives you a flavour of the interesting subjects that can be seen here.

Peter

Lovely stuff. Takes me back to my yoof in the 1960s. I really enjoyed taking pictures (and riding on) the Severn Valley Railway between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster last Spring - there is so much to photograph in these places.

Peter, I wholeheartedly agree with the above comment, that shot in my opinion is exceptional, that's not to say the others are bad (not at all), just that that one in paticular takes some beating

We have the Bluebell line at Sheffield Park near me I keep meaning to go over there, perhaps your display will give me the kick I need to visit.

Peter, great set of photo's. I like both the train and old passenger cars. Do you know how old they are and if they have the original interior? The steam images are also my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line)

Thanks Dave, Neil and Danny for viewing and your comments. Railways have always been a special interest for me - steam in particular. The steam brings them to life unlike diesel and electric train. Ooh te smell of the hot oil and smoke........

Danny,
The carriages are mostly Mk1 carriages, built from about 1951. Some though date back through to the 1930's. The railway employs volunteers that restore the carriages back to their original condition, internally and externally.
The same goes for the steam locomotives and wagons. All lovingly restored and returned to use. This marks the difference between Museums and Preserved Railways. All the stock must meet safety conditions before it is allowed to be used and therefore cosmetic repairs will never meet the aims of the railway.

I shall post some more images of this railway later. I have asked for permission to visit the stock awaiting restoration and hope to take pictures of volunteers at work on this task.

Some lovely work there, Peter - two of my all time favourite steam engines as well (the Gresley A4 and the Spam Can!).

Cracking images

Re: Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line)

Thank you Thea. My favourite locos too

The dedication shown by the volunteers on these enterprises is worthy of recording. It reminds me very much of my early youth. To be able to re-live it in this way always gives pleasure so hats off to those who give so much of their own time to restore and cherish these items.

Thank you Nigel. My daughter was pleased to get them too. She is creating a simple web site for me so really, we both gain and it was not entirely selfless

Nice pictures. These preservation railways make a great subject. You prompted me to go to out local Nene Valley Railway today. Here are some pics.

Lovely shots there Mike. Preserved railways are just crying out for photographers. All aspects catered for - Action, People, Buildings etc.
I was wondering about the bus though - its a long way from home

Not a preserved steam loco but a brand new one. Tornado approaching Redbridge 10 days ago.
