"Strange & familiar" exhibition at the Barbican

I visited the wonderful "Strange and Familiar" exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery yesterday: it shows social documentary, street and architectural images of 23 foreign photographers from the middle of the last century in to the last decade, and is curated by the excellent Martin Parr.

Featured artists include Paul Strand, HC-B, Garry Winogrand, Robert Frank and Frank Habicht. Among others, I discovered the work of Edith Tudor-Hart, who was the mother of a contemporary of mine from medical school.

Tickets aren't cheap, but it's worth a good couple of hours of anyone's time. It's on until June 19th.

Re: "Strange & familiar" exhibition at the Barbican

Thanks Mark, I had been wondering about this one. Could be good for a day in London (plus a week getting lost in the Barbican) while SW Trains are still doing their 15 day returns.

It reminds me very much of an exhibition at Tate Britain during the Olympics called "Another London". Similar theme, also very good.

Re: "Strange & familiar" exhibition at the Barbican

Ha! The gallery is on level 3, and the lifts aren't far from the main entrance on Silk Street.

Good luck BTW if you want to do any photography in the Barbican and surrounding estates - I was stopped twice by (actually quite pleasant) security guards, but not before I'd got some shots of course!

I hadn't seen that Tate exhibition before: some of the images are in both, but there's actually a very large number here from outside London and a number of photographers are included that I'd either not heard of or didn't know much about.

If you were in the area by 22nd April there's a nice exhibition of Sergio Larrain's images at the Magnum Print Room on Gee St, about 10' walk north of the Barbican:

This is free (and while going round the exhibition you can hear the Magnum clerical staff in the next room discussing projects with photographers and print sales on the phone, which is quite interesting). Sergio Larrain also features in the Parr exhibition at the Barbican, but there are enough different images in Magnum to make a visit worthwhile. The place can be visited 11-4.30 Wednesday-Saturday (but its worth phoning to check for a specific day, because they do close it unpredictably).
