recent bird shots

Hi all!
I would like to show some recent photos of feathered friends, which I am quite pleased with. Taken in winter sun light - the first we had in weeks. The downside is of course, it's a little cold - but of that later.

#1

Of the Great White Egrets (Casmerodius albus) we don't get many, but I see one or two birds regularly. They will not let me get any closer then a good 100m, before taken to flight. This time I managed to stalk within just 35m; the -15°C may have helped me here?! 70-300+EC-14@190mm

#2

This Nuthatch I got on a Pine trunk with the golden winter sun low in the SW.

#3

This Nuthatch is sitting ontop the old Apple tree in the garden; again the sun low in SW; he seems to enjoy the warm light, as he did not move position for some time, which is quite rare.

#4

The same bird as above, now at the trunk of said old Apple tree, with the sun behind it. A reflection from a window serves me well as a spot light here.

#5

With the lowest temps since ages, this Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) may have made a big mistake, when it appeared at my feeder instead of staying save, down at the Côte da Sure!? There is a ring on this bird, but unfortunately I have not been able to read it in full, not from all the frames I took.

#6

This particular Blackbird and I became friends during this winter. He is a young bird from last year and just turns into full mature colours. He allows me to get very close some times. But the best of all is, that he starts to sing his Blackbird song, when I step outside and he sees me; he does it very faint and only barely hearable - just form me (I like to imagine), standing so very close to him! A little sense of spring time - in the very winter - great!

Ahh - and just for the record - this is the record so far:

Thermometer sitting next to my front door; very early this morning. This reads in Celsius.

Cheers,
Falk

Re: recent bird shots

Excellent set of images, looks like you are having very good photographic weather ( in terms of light) but -20C is a bit too cold for my liking!

Re: recent bird shots

Excellent set of high quality images, thanks for sharing. I have spotted Great White Egrets on one occasion here in Sweden, but that was before I had adequate photo gear.

The composition (portrait) in the Nuthach pictures contributes in making them even more exciting and "living". /Tord

Nice set - but can't even imagine weather that cold!
Love the blackbird - the ring around the eye always looks good, and this is a nice photo. IMHO.

Re: recent bird shots

Falk,
Lovely set of sharp images. The starling reminded me of a recent news item about the starling flight displays over Gretna in southern Scotland before they migrate for the winter. Can't find the video clip but here are some stills from the Daily Fail as we call it here.

Re: recent bird shots

What a superb collection. The Nuthatch are my favourites. Thanks for sharing them.

I find that the E5 (or E3) are very difficult to handle at extreme cold temperatures. The metal bodies suck the heat from your hands. I now have a pair of thin (but insulated) driving gloves which I find essential in these conditions. Very well done.

Re: recent bird shots

Magnificent set of bird shots. As others, I love the Nuthatch shots. Excellent IQ from this combo which has not always had a good press recently.

I have a weakness for Blackbirds, Falk so #6 is my favourite, but all are nice.

Re: recent bird shots

Thanks folks,
I appreciate all your kind comments - and even more so, that I am now able to read them - at all! Have been blacked out by a severe Virus attack with a subsequent hardware failure
Had a hard two days time to locate and kill the virus (via Linux boot-CD and all by hand!), replace hardware and restore the network capabilites. And I am gald as one can be, that I was able to do it all without any loss of data - ufff!

Cheers,
Falk

If you think that's cold try spending a winter on the Canadian prairies, -40 (that's the same in C and F) isn't unusual.
